2004 Acura TL 5 speed manual?
I can not figure out why my 2004 Acura TL has a 5 speed manual transmission? When I look it up on NADA and KBB it asks if it is a 6 speed manual or automatic. Why a 5 speed manual, was that an option from factory or did somebody put an aftermarket in? ??? puzzled

Ok thanks to all for your input. I bought this car about 3 months ago and assumed it was a 5 speed manual transmission because the gear shifter displays 5 gears and reverse. but when I put insurance on it and when I would value it using nada and kbb I could never find the 5 speed manual option. so it bothered me and I tried to figure it out. so after posting this thread and seeing the comments I took it out on the highway, determined to find the 6th gear, and yes I found out! apparently previous owner put a 5 speed shifter nob on it :/ I like my car even more now

yes driving at 4000 rpm did raise some questions... although it probably stayed around 3500 at 75 mph... but with cruise control it seemed too responsive... but my shifter knob said nothing about a 6th gear, so it was hidden from me... on my 5 speed shifter knob "R" is where "6" is. hence why I haven't tried it before... yea its hilarious now, but Im so happy to have solved this mystery

yes it locks out reverse when moving.
or at least it should. I think there was someone where the solenoid failed and let the guy shift into R. Pretty rare though.

Here are some cool 6-speed options:
Anyone tried the Mugen Si shift knob? Part number 54102-XVJ-000 and cost $116 straight from any online Honda dealer.
Mugen also has a carbon fiber knob with either a black or red stripe around it ($100+ on ebay):
Honda also sells a yellow 6MT knob & boot for the S2000 CR 54102-S2A-C00 $53 at the dealer:
....and a red one from the JDM Civic Type R 54102-SMT-E01 ($78+ on ebay)

Since we are showing knob options, I think this is one of the best - It's nearly impossible to find something like this aftermarket -leather wrapped metal ball....
I just ordered it. Can't wait for it to arrive. I had the Civic Type-R knob and a solid metal knob is unbearable in the summer here in SC. I've had a metal shift knob in every car I've owned and none are touchable in the afternoon heat. I'd either have to shift quick or use a glove. This leather wrapped one should prevent that!

Keep Right Except to Pass
Maybe the previous owner lives somewhere with really hot weather such that the metal shift knob burned his hand and he needed something different.

Well, it turned out better than I thought. I thought it was going to be an auto with a manual shift knob and the owner thought it was a dual clutch or other automated manual lol.
I guess I would be happy to find another gear although I think I would have gone for 6th on the first day of ownership. I had a POS 87 Celica bought for $200 just for commuting 210 miles a day. It tached 4,000-4,500rpm in the 60-75mph range I used to drive it at in top (5th) gear. More than once I reached down to shift it into the nonexistent 6th gear out of instinct because the rpms were so high.
That same car got stuck in 5th gear when I was 90 miles out of town and I had to drive it home with it in 5th the whole way including stopping at 4 or 5 red lights. That was fun.

Any car will do 4000rpm on any road in top gear. It all depends on what speed you're going.
My civic does 4000rpm in 5th at 73mph. It has a relatively short 150mph transmission though (8400rpm in 5th).
The 3G TL has a 203mph transmission (6800rpm in 6th). If you were on the highway in 5th at 70mph, you would only be turning 2800rpm. To hit 4k in 5th, you would be doing 97mph.
Gear calculators are fun.

My car is at approx 2k rpm at 69mph, I can guarantee that. This is true for pretty much every other TL I've seen. Automatic of course. If you're talking about 6mt then I have no idea
