Most will simply change the oil when the maintenance minder tells them to. I believe the maintenance minder is based on a variety of factors such as RPM, mileage and age. 3000 mile oil changes are for 20 year old 350ci small block chevy's. Those days are long gone. Engines are manufactured to tighter tolerances and oil technology has vastly improved. As such, OCI intervals are much longer. However, I wouldn't necessarily push it to the 10000-15000 miles that many auto manufacturers recommend now-a-days. I kept track of the miles on my 3G and the 15% mark would almost always happen after 7000 miles. The same has been the case with my 4G.

You'll find different opinions on this. My personal opinion is changing oil around the 6K-7K mark (so about when the maintenance minder hits the 15% mark or so). Oil is cheap and at an average of 15K a year, that's only twice per year. A good synthetic will easily last that long and have lots of life left. My only justification for changing even that early is due to contaminants that get in oil, especially with higher mileage engines. Well, and that oil is cheap so why not.

I change my oil when the oil life reach 15% it varies between 5500 - 7000 miles depend on how I commute, I am using full synthetic. The car computer can't tell if you using conventional/ synthetic blend or full synthetic, Acura dealer use synthetic blend.

Oil life % has been calculate on your driving habit, engine load, environment temperature and engine RPM. The reason why some manufacture recommend 10k-15k miles (BMW is one of them) because their engine oil capacity is around 10 quarts, our TL has around 4.7 quarts.

Take that to perspective 4.7 quarts last for 7000 miles then approximate 10 quarts should be good at least 14,000 miles.

By all accounts the oil monitor in the 3G TL is simply mileage based; reset it, drive 7,500 miles and it will show 0%.

In this day and age, changing oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months is a complete waste of good oil; there is zero benefit in doing so versus going the full 7,500 miles.

Hmmm, none of my BMWs had a 10-quart sump, IIRC, it took almost exactly 7-quarts to bring the level up to full on the stick.

You are right for the 3 series and inline 6 motors BMW however.

You never seen a E92 M3 or 2002-2005 M5 oil chage lol, its like $250 for an oil change that using the special 10w-60 that only available through BMW or Castro Edge

but still 7 quarts will at least yield more than 7k miles.

Ahhh, M engines are a completely different matter. If you interpolate 7 quarts equaling 15,000 miles, then 4.5 quarts would equate to 9,643 miles.

The most simple way is to use the maintenance minder.

It doesn't matter if you use synthetic...though there are obviously a few benefits.

The minder is programmed to monitor factors and compare them to the studied oil life of oil that was spec'd when the car was made.

Again. Simple is better. Just use the maintenance minder.

I know lots of OLMs are programmed the way you suggest, BMWs come to mind, but the OLM on my 2006 TL is strictly mileage based. Case in point, between my first and second oil changes I took a leisurely 3,500 mile road trip over the course of six days and the minder hit 0% at 7,500, exactly. The next oil change cycle featured a very high amount of urban driving, much of it during the winter time; the OLM hit 0% at 7,500 miles, exactly, once again.

You may be right. V6 Accords seem the same way.

My 06 and 11 TSX's vary, depending on use, however. Strange that the higher end TL is programmed to measure miles only.

What I meant is that its programmed to go off based on a conservative estimate of how long the studied oil should last for typical users. No idea what oil they used for the test.

There are probably a huge amount of 300+K mile Accords and TL's that have had their oil changes done by OLM read out. So...its a pretty safe bet.

Its between 8-9 litres for e39 M5 drain and refill with filter and no where near $250. Dealers dont sell the Castrol TWS anymore they shifted to rebranded Shell IIRC and while I use Castrol thats what motor was originally designed for it shows 5/30 as refill for car in manual and on cap.

OP - oil is so cheap for now and cheapest and easiest PM you can perform, whether you change it at 3k or 7k or 10k really shouldnt matter as long as you change it regularly and if you mate that with ATF drain and refill, if you have an AT car, youll be golden.

NOTE: I personally think since the vehicle is new to you you need to baseline it then it will be fresh and on your intervals for PM. Baselining will be to go through the car drain and refill fluids, inspect/replace mechanical components, etc. I do this to everyone of my cars upon purchase if I have no history. Now you will have piece of mind the car is up to your standards.

No such a thing as the best oil; oil is like religion, use the brand you worship the most, it will make no difference on how long your engines lasts.
