07 Accord V6 Trans - too many miles for a swap?
 

So I've been casually looking in my area for an AV6 trans for the inevitable swap I'm going to have to do. I found a guy parting out an 07 V6 accord, and he already has the trans and torque converter pulled. The kicker is, it has 205k miles on it....

He's asking $400, and I could probably offer like $350, plus the benefit of it being local and picking it up myself.....but I'm wondering - I know the BAYA trans is reliable, but is it 205k + reliable?

Should I pass on it and look for lower mileage?

In your shoes I might be inclined to buy it for that $350 and then, since the need isn't urgent, buy an overhaul kit. I've never done it but I've looked at a few How-To videos of the 5-Speed Honda automatic transmission overhaul process and it looks pretty straight forward.

I didn't even think of that - I think that's a great idea. I have the tools and the time, along with coworkers who have trans rebuild experience. Would definitely be a good skill to have. Thanks for the suggestion. Now I just need to find a decent rebuild kit.

If you buy it and overhaul it, make sure you get the TransLab shift kit for it. Makes shift feel much more consistent on all upshifts, shifts are faster but without that GM shift kit bang shift feel.

Thank you Scott. As somebody with zero experience with trans rebuilds, would the overhaul kit be the only thing I need for a trans w/ 205k? I notice the TransLab kit does not appear to have any gaskets, seals, clutches, etc....

Just bumping this thread to find an answer on the rebuild question. Is the Translab kit for the AV6/BAYA the only thing required? or am I going to want to purchase a rockauto rebuild kit for the clutches, and seals as well, considering the trans has over 200K?

I own exactly an 07 AV6 and I will tell you that the torque converter clutch was on its way out at 275K miles, when I had it rebuilt at a shop with the translab shift kit installed. I diligently kept up on the transmission fluid changes, pressure switches changes, and with an external B&M cooler installed since 205k miles. The trans' torque converter overheats easily in heavy traffic driving without the Translab shift kit coupled with the modified valve body. The BAYA transmission in its stock form has an issue with torque converter not getting fluid for cooling because of the valve body design, this is documented on Sonnax' website. If you still want that used trans at 205k miles, send it straight to a trans shop for rebuild first and install the shift kit. If you just straight up install it, then it's just a matter of time before it needs a rebuild.
