'05 TL 5AT Delay shifting from neutral to drive?

Does anyone elses car have a longer delay going into drive gear than it takes to have reverse engage?

When I shift I need to wait another second or two for it to be in forward. My car only has 18k miles and the fluid looks to be full and very clean.

Thanks in advance!

When you shift any gears (AT) stop fully and make sure that you are not rolling back, then change the gears. Also it takes a second for all the sensors to agree and move the transmission components into the drive position, so it seems normal. The only thing that wouldn't seem normal is that you put it in drive, press the gas and the RPMS jump up and then the car starts moving...

Okay thanks for the reply. The rpms don't rev up w/o the car moving so maybe the delay is just normal. I will be more attentive to being completely stopped and see how it goes.

I have the same issue. It's about a 2-2.5 sec delay once you put it in drive. I have 34K miles (AT)

I had that same problem with my '03 TL-s which was not there when I bought the car with 20k miles on it. In the end it was the start to my transmission going out around 60k miles. After I got the tranny replaced, all was fine again. That car ended up getting totalled, so I got an '05 TL and no delay from N to D so far.

Mine has exhibited the delay since the day I brought it home. Has not changed at all in the last 33K miles. The one time I had it at the dealer they "claim" it was/is normal.... (As usual though, I "claim" they're full of $hit..)In the past this was a definite indication of a pump issue etc.. Since it hasn't got any worse I haven't engaged again but will on my next visit.. I want them to at least document it prior to the warranty running out....

Mine is more of a two step feel. It feels like it instantly goes half engaged then a second later drops in fully etc.. And yes, if you punch the gas in between the two "steps", it will rev then lurch forward... This was by no means normal on the auto's I once dealt/worked with....

Good luck

same here with my 07 TL-S.......I have to wait a sec of two for it to change gears whether its reverse or drive. My 01 Camry has a quicker response than the TL-S <--- thats sad.

My '02 TL-S hs been like this since the day I bought it (6.5 years ago). Two trannies (replaced under warranty, but I wasn't having any noticeable issues), same deal.

Mine is the exact same way. It does the two step thing as well. It seems to engage lightly and then engage fully a half second later.

BTW, I tried making sure I came to a complete stop, like what was suggested in an earlier post and it makes no difference.

Glad I only have 18k miles and still have warranty for a couple years. lol

I could tell mine changed easily because I switch from R to D to drive up a hill. It started taking an extra second or two longer cause instead of usually going forward I ended freaking out cause I started rolling back the hill towards my neighbors house and then lurches after it catches. It took me 4 months to finally prove it to my dealer that my tranny was shot. Hope yours doesn't change any.

I dunno mine switches pretty quick I mean there is like a half a second delay dunno about a 2 second delay... you feel it click when it goes back and forth in between the 2 gears... when you shift into reverse the sound is of course louder...

From the thread "Very interesting conversation with my transmission builder on the TL" post # 910

http://www.brisdance.com/Honda/AT3rdClutch.html

"There are still posts about a delay when shifting from N into D in the V6 5AT- The engagement of 1st gear is phased and the design delay is around 1.8 to 2 seconds before hydraulic change over from 3rd to 1st is "fully" complete. This is a design delay NOT a fault in the V6 5AT. That basic 1st engagement delay timing is after moving the lever from N to D and not getting on the accelerator. It varies with oil temperature, oil viscosity and some 3rd gear shift logic learned parameters that also appear to affect N to D phased engagement time - nice one Honda."

I noticed this too, but the rpms don't rev up either. Thought it to be normal as well, a lot say there is a short delay. Nice to have some solid backing on that claim.

As far as the delay from N to D.. I think that's normal for Honda Transmissions. I use to own a 2007 Accord EX-L and it always had that delay, nothing wrong with it but it is a standard issue for Honda's across the board.

I used to be a driveaccord.net member and this exact same question would come up for the 7th Gen Accords 03-07. If I recall, no matter how much you change your ATF it's not going to change your gears from 2.2 sec delay to nothing.

The best smooth transmissions I've driven are Infiniti and Lexus...
