Instead of making a new thread...is it cheaper to buy the stuff off of eBay and have it installed or is it cheaper to order a Viper kit with remote?

^^^ I would think this route is cheaper Austin....

in all honesty, i do not think you will need any other sensor than the shock sensor (and/or tilt)....anything more than that is an overkill....

now if you want remote start and wanna get Viper or some like that, then there is no point venturing into this....in that case get a full aftermarket security system.....

i am happy with my factory alarm and just need to add shock sensor which will be sitting on moderate sensitivity

Thanks Anil, I don't need remote start but a shock sensor and tilt sensor will for sure be on my car.

Yeah, it's a lot more expensive and not really a necessity, the TL cools down pretty fast.

Do you have Viper? Was $150 just the starter or did that include a tilt and/or shock sensor?

The smart start is pretty sweet. I would love to have it, just can't justify the cost, initial & monthly.

I keep getting thoughts abut how it sucks that there's way of telling if our car alarm is going off when you can't hear the alarm, but the awesome part is that people around will hear the alarm, and check it out which will scare theives away.

That's why I was wondering about Viper, their 2 way channel tells you when the car locks/unlocks/goes off, and you could link it to the GPS on your phone.

Expensive lol

Totally worth the security though.

Brother, thanks for the write up...I managed to do this over the weekend after completing my high flow cats install...AWESOME!

I also went a different route in a few key areas without posting TOO much information since we're trying to ADD security to our cars. I tapped ground, in engine bay, tapped trigger wire from under the front bumper, and power from the "horn" fuse in the engine bay. Didn't have to run wires to the cabin and the sensor picks up the vibrations from a "shock" from anywhere on the car. I set the knob to the right, or extremely sensitive. Already accidentally set it off by closing my trunklid when I hadn't disarmed.

Glad to hear!

Yeah turning the knob to the right is to add more sensitive lol

The knob is at like 3 o clock for me.
I think the most sensitive is like 5 o clock.
The sensor comes default at 12 o clock I think.

If you hit your door panel, does the alarm go off?
I'm gonna add one more shock sensor to the car so I'll find out the best places I suppose.

I havn't tried hitting my door panel hard, but I could imagine the door seals cushioning the vibration or shock.
When I made the demo video I hit the fender, which is obviously directly contacted with the metal in the car so it felt the shock.

Yes sir...it works...I gave it a good solid bottom of my fist right between the doors and BAM, set it off.

Thanks again for the tips...rather than spend more on another sensor..why don't you and I pioneer this tilt sensor in addition to the shock?

Did you have to hit your door really hard? =P

I can imagine myself trying to hit the door and making a dent and stll no alarm going off lol

I'm not too worried about the tilt sensor.
It's a little expensive, and I don't think my car will be tilted or anything.
Maybe in the near future, though!

I think I'll buy another shock sensor and mount it in a different place.

You wired the trigger wire to the hood latch switch without removing your front bumper?
Was it difficult?

No sir, not difficult at all...if you remove the front engine garnish, and jack it up, you can see EXACTLY what you need to to get to the clips and to remove the plastic hood release plastic cover. Easy peasy...

the tilt sensor is $25 bucks, no? I think I found it on amazon...but it's made by a different company, just want to make sure it'll work first.

J.

I have to hit my car harder than I normally would...but less hard than a thief that doesn't care about anything but smashing my window or banging into the car with a door or something.

Rockstar or GP, can either of you guys test out this "shock sensor" to see if it will set off the alarm if you lean on the car anywhere at all?

I was out eating at five guys burgers the other day. I sat by the window so I can see my car and while looking out into the parking lot I saw this 10-14 year old kid lean on a pristine condition black G37x that was parked next to his mom and dads SUV. He was leaning on the rear trunk / bumper of the G37x with his back on the car as he was waiting for his parents to load things into the SUV.

When I witnessed that, I immediately thought about this "shock" sensor and was wondering if it would have triggered the alarm by simply having a 100+ lb weight leaning against the car..

Can someone test that out?

I'm guessing the "shock sensor" requires a very quick and abrupt movement to the car for it to trigger the alarm.. 1 body weight leaning on the car may not set it off.

Leaning will NOT set it off....I'm sure of that...with no impact, you won't set this off. If you add the tilt sensor supposedly it calibrates itself every time you arm the car...and in that case, if the kid leans and makes the car go off kilter, it'll go off.

Otherwise, you can just go outside and politely ask him to get off the car...

That makes sense. I already purchased it so there's no going back now. Having a tilt sensor would be nice, but i'm seeing it go for ~$35 on ebay...

I'll settle for this $13 shock sensor for now. I really wish I had a key that would alert me when my alarm has gone off or some type of app lol but I'm sure that can only be had with a aftermarket system costing $100+

i don't think you'll have a problem with this even though you have a little one (battery ). It's not actually "active" unless you kick the car which makes the little red led light up.

^^^ well i thought (GP correct me if am wrong here) that you are supplying the unit with a constant HOT wire....so the wire is hot whether your car is on or not !!!

adding another device means sucking more out of the already little one (battery) that i have.....

i might go for a week or two without the unit and just my battery to see how it starts up in the morning and then add this unit....

You shouldnt run into any problems. The shock sensor actually uses very little to power.
If you do, sell the shock sensor to me.

It definitely doesn't take a constant source of power...it's just powered to provide the signal in the CASE of a shock...all it really does is trick the hood into breaking contact and thinking it's been opened.

^^^ then how does it sense shock if its not on all the time ? for it to sense (be in the lookout for) shock it has to be on all the time right ?

am curious....there was no way for me to rephrase that sentence....not trying to be a duusshhh, just wanting to learn more about the unit....

I've read somewhere that it only consumes 1mA.

1mA isn't much at all

quote from a member on Porsche forums

Everything I've found so far says the DEI 504 runs 1 ma current draw. You could hook it to 12V & leave it on all the time (it would probably take 6 years of not starting the car to discharge the car battery at a 1ma draw).

I have to ask, why did you disconnect your shock sensor?

Does the iSimple continue to charge your ipod even after the key has been removed from the ignition? If so, I didn't know that. I thought it only charges it when the car is on ACC mode or started.

Why not just unplug your iPod from the iSimple when you get out of the car lol

Yeah, the iSimple charges even though there's no key in the ignition (24/7).

I sometimes disconnect my iPod, and but most of the time I keep the iPod plugged in, always charging.

If someone walks past my car and tries to open my door while it's locked, will the shock sensor pick up the disturbance as it kind of slams against the car after they release the door handle?

Will that simple thump from letting a door handle snap-back to its default position be enough to set the alarm off?

Nah, the shock sensor isn't that sensitive I believe.

Now if you installed a shock sensor on the door panel right by the door handle, it would definitely go off.

Excellent DIY.

I was totally kidding about removing the sensor, fellas.
1...I've had the isimple for 3 years now...never had a problem with draining the battery...although I did have a problem with the ipod battery dying since it is constantly cycling the battery...but it was already 6 years old, so maybe the battery was just going anyway.

Vietx, the more questions you ask about this, the more I'm thinking you may need to get an aftermarket pager style super sensitive alarm, bud...this, for me is to scare people off that pound a fist on my window or run a shopping car into my fender. If a squirrel comes by and takes a 1/2 acorn size dump on the hood, unfortunately, it won't go off.
