So what's your EV 'high score'?

Since acquiring the SH, I've been intrigued by how far I can go in my daily commute on EV. Here I thought I would constantly be in Sport mode tearing up the asphalt, and yet, all I do is try to see how far I can go without turning on the ICE (you were all right - it is a nerd mobile, but a very cool one at that!)

Yesterday, I broke my high score by driving 11.8km of my 37.4km afternoon commute on EV (31.6% of the total drive).

I'm curious to know if these results are in line with what others are achieving - or if I still have some work to do... I seem to be getting better results now that the weather has warmed up, which must have something to do with the performance of the battery. It also depends on traffic patterns, because if it's lighter than normal and cruising speeds are above roughly 90 km/hr, the EV won't engage. The sweet spot seems to be when traffic is heavy but moving consistently under 90 km/hr.

My average had been very close to yours, about 33%. That was putting me at avg 30 mpg per tankful. I too spent my initial few months learning how the car optimizes efficiency and learned how to drive it to achieve that. Once I became convinced the car does deliver the EPA ratings I started to focus less on the efficiency and more on the fun! I pay less attention to the efficiency now and have developed a twitchy SPORT mode finger - I LOVE the sound this car makes in SPORT mode. I also lift off throttle less often when approaching turns and stomp it once reaching the apex. As a result, I have dropped to 28 mpg avg. I also noticed using Costco Tier 1 premium fuel does not deliver the mpg's that Shell premium does, but Costco is 30 cents less per gallon than Shell.

In the end the car does deliver as promised. The power and performance of a V8 without the efficiency penalty of a V8. In the end the smiles and giggles this car delivers far exceed the slight difference in efficiency metrics.

The trip home last night was not out of the ordinary. 11.3 miles on EV, 12.5 miles on ICE averaged 40.1 mpg for that run, and the heat was on. The best I can remember was getting something like 45 mpg for a 10 mile trip. But to do that I was feathering the gas the whole way. If you can stay under 45 mph and drive limo smoothly, it is repeatable. I have found that if you accelerate quicker than one would normally for just a couple of seconds, then feather the gas and try to remain in EV mode as much as possible, that seems to deliver the most repeatable and consistent results. It is fun to be a mpg geek and then gas it and destroy that mpg in the same trip. I'm back to averaging around 30.5 to 31.3 mpg on average for a tank now that we are on summer gas.

^^ That's over 65% of your drive (albeit a shorter drive). You're the reigning champ.

He was going downhill, tires over inflated, interior stripped out and had additional propellant from the Mexican food he had for lunch.

One time I drove home from my local grocery store which is generally flat to down hill slightly and made it home almost entirely on EV. It is about 3 miles door to door, and I think it showed up as 145 mpg (I think) but that was because the EV was at near 100%, I caught the all green traffic lights, nobody was around so I could really feather the gas on the slight uphill sections remaining in EV for almost all of it, and coasted on the down hill sections to recharge for the next straightaway. I have never done that again, but I'll bet if it was late at night and there was no traffic around to be upset that I am going 25 mph in a 40mph zone in two places, I could repeat that feat. Oh and the heat and AC were off too. I think I have a picture of that screen after I completed it. I'll try to find it.

It amazes me that each one of us have had similar feelings, emotions, and experiences with these wonderful automobiles. I, too, spend an inordinate amount of time attempting to better my EV operation time. Every trip during a normal, routine day becomes a contest. I am also averaging about 25-30% of the time in EV mode. But, since getting the car in February, the warmer weather has bettered the EV time and the gas mileage figures.

Operating in sport mode is, as they say, is like driving a Jekyll & Hyde automobile. So, for 95% of my driving, normal mode works fine for me.

If I want to get all crazy out there, that's why I bought my C7 Corvette convertible last year. Now there's a Jekyll & Hyde ride.........luxurious touring one moment, crazy, sports car, knife-edge driving in the next. Life is good.

I never try to get the car on EV mode as my commute is either stop and go or 75+ mph. But when I saw this post i was gentle on the car and gas pedal and this is what I could come up with from the gas station to home.

not trying to highjack the thread, but the i3 EV gives you stars for driving economical. In other words, it rates your ability to anticipate stops and not use brakes past the regen mode plus other variables
you guys need some more positive feedback to make you feel good

I really like the multiple personalities of this car. I feel I have at least two cars for the price of one. And since I am a true Gemini, I can switch to which car suits which twin is driving that day.

In the last few days this is what I have recorded for 10+ mile trips (I wrote them down):
(all local roads under 45 mph and the engine was already warmed to temperature)
  • 6.6 miles on EV, 6.8 miles on ICE returned 40.1 mpg
  • 5.2 miles on EV, 7.2 miles on ICE returned 38.8 mpg
  • 6.9 miles on EV, 8.6 miles on ICE returned 36.9 mpg
  • 5.6 miles on EV, 3.8 miles on ICE returned 45.2 mpg (more downhill in general) - this one touched 50 mpg for a second but then I climbed the next hill as I approached my destination and the mpg dropped.
Highway miles are ranging between 29-33 mpg depending on how much fun I am having. Overall I am seeing tanks averaging around 31+ mpg lately. It is fun to be a mpg geek!

I'm envious of everyone that has posted. Here in hilly southwest Ohio, it's impossible to stay in EV mode for long. I also find I can't consistently get the 30ish mpg you regularly enjoy. Seems my hills and climate are not ideal for efficiency in this car. Still damn fun.

I am guessing it is something specific to the gas additive in that area, and potentially the mix of roads and topography. Just a guess.

My local mpg is very repeatable.

I think we missed my feeble attempt at sarcasm. Being that our fearless leader (Bob) is in Cleveland, and his poor mileage was unique, I was just trying to tie it to him!

I know I got it, and I'm sure Bob picked up on it.
What's interesting is that other than a common state capital, Cleveland and Cincinnati have almost nothing in common. I doubt the folks in Cleveland even recognize Cincinnati Chili as food. Cleveland is more northeastern, Cincinnati more midwestern (or southern if you ask many Clevelanders). Cleveland is significantly colder in the winter with way more snow, and Cincinnati tends to be hotter longer in the summer. Cleveland is relatively flat, and Cincinnati is hilly. There's a big difference in politics, but we won't go there. The politicians in the state capital like Cleveland, whereas they think Cincinnati is part of Kentucky or Indiana.
As an experiment, I should move south 2 miles to Kentucky, or west 5 miles to Indiana and see if my mileage increases!

How do you get the car in ev mode?

On spor hybrid mdx there was eco normal sport and sport + modes. On my 17 rlx sh I do not see drive modes. I only see a sport button. I turn it on on the freeway when I am trying to maneuver but mostly it is off. I also am trying to be an mpg geek. I am only getting 27 mpg. Highest mpg I achieved was 29.6. What am I doing wrong? Mostly freeway driving. Of course I have AC on. I am in California. I always coast with all my cars to not waist gas and use brakes unnecessarily. I just take my foot off the gas and let the car coast downhill or if I see traffic ahead or a light that is red, etc.
On a separate note, I had my splash guards, body side molding, trunk mat, tray, cargo net, rear bumper appliqué, door edge film installed. Once I get my tint, I will take some nicer pics. With a 2015 tlx v6 tech which was my loaner for a day. I averaged 32.5 mpg with same driving style and same routes.

Broke my high score yesterday on the way home from the office - 19.0km of my 37.5km commute or 50.7% of the drive on EV.

The jekyll and hyde of this vehicle continues to amaze me. I can drive it like a lunatic or I can drive it calmly and sip fuel - and both are fun...

The RLX SH doesn't have IDS drive modes as on other Acuras. It only has "normal mode" and Sport Mode. Sport mode is.....well......crazy fun.....with the ICE always on and the electric motors available full time.

Pure EV mode is available when the car is at 57 mph or below, and typically without acceleration. You don't otherwise have to do anything special to achieve it. My average FE was worse than yours, I had 24 mpg in the almost 24k miles I spent with my RLX....but I have a heavy throttle foot. Honestly, even when I hypermiled my car, the best I did on a tank of fuel was 27 mpg. It seems really hit or miss with this car. Even so, my city fuel economy was far better than with the PAWS RLX.

Good luck, and have fun driving this car.

MDX SH has odd UI for the modes
You use the IDS to pick
Comfort
Normal
Sport
Sport+
However, you can pick D versus S using the shift button. So is there Comfort Normal Sport and Sport+ while in "D" as well as while in "S"?

^^^That sounds like a good idea. There are times that you still want a smooth ride, but prefer the more aggressive shifts/acceleration along with it. For example, if you are on a 2 lane highway and need to pass frequently, you can still enjoy a smooth ride while you are rocketing past slow vehicles.

All this MDX Sport Hybrid talk has me chomping at the bit.

I put about 100 miles on the RLX-SH today and achieved 33.9mpg one way and 35.7 mpg the other. Loved every second of it and tomorrow I will put on about 150 miles on the MDX-SH. When I finally filled up the MDX-SH after our earlier trip, the numbers were as follows: 27.9 mpg overall for the tank, traveled 556 miles and had 57 miles to empty. Since I will be the only driver this week in the MDX-SH, we will see if my driving techniques produce better results than the combination of my wife's driving and mine. I love those dampers on the MDX-SH. I do wish it were more lively like the RLX-SH on the acceleration front, but it is just so smooth and an enjoyable ride, and that is an SUV! Who talks like this about an SUV?

142 miles driven today. 29.2 mpg so far. 537 miles to empty. I did top off the tank. Currently I am still on the full mark.

RLX-Sport-Hybrid . . . . . . . are you sure you are not getting paid by Acura? Just kidding. Love the updates. It really sounds like you are enjoying that MDX-SH. You are making my self imposed wait until the end of the year to unload my RXh harder and harder!

Most definitely not my friend. Just a happy enthusiastic owner of two cool cars. I'm quite surprised how much I am enjoying the new MDX-SH. One gripe though. At speeds above 70mph the area of the hood that is right in front of the wipers vibrates from the wind and it is distracting with the reflections bouncing on the surface. I just hope my comments help those who are thinking about purchasing our vehicles, get a clear unbiased opinion of the good and bad each of these cars. Nothing is without a flaw, and neither of these cars are without their own issues and short comings.

Vibrating hood.... Our 2007 MDX hood was the subject of a recall where the dealer had to send it to a body shop to install special bracing underneath the hood....... The first long drive we took in that SUV was so unnerving from the hood "flapping" I stopped twice just to make sure it was securely latched! It doesn't seem your new MDXSH is that bad. The recall definitely helped but they didn't install heavier duty struts so the first time I lifted the hood to see what they did, it almost fell on my head! Good thing I have a hard head.

The 2007 MDX is still going strong and my wife still loves it (less than 100k miles on it).... I've been looking real hard at the MDXSH and told her we'd get it as soon as we can get a decent deal. She said "Why? the 2007 is just fine". She obviously doesn't know what she's talking about.......

Re vibrating hood - I noticed this on my RLX, but have not noticed on MDX. RLX was black, MDX is white

This made me laugh. My wife drives a 2006 Honda Odyssey with around 90,000 miles and she says the exact same thing. With my affinity for detailing cars, I've kept the van looking brand new and she always says why would she get rid of it - it works just fine. I suppose the good news for me is that it allows me to get newer cars more frequently...
