Let's talk about brake dust

My RDX produces more brake dust than anything I've owned since my old BMW's. I often go out between car washes and spend a half-hour cleaning my wheels with Windex to keep the vehicle from looking like crap.

So, how are the RLX brakes? Given the multitude of spokes on the 19's, mopping off the dust could be a real chore, so I'm wondering how dusty the RLX's brakes are ... ?

The only Armor All product I actually use. It keeps brake dust off the wheels for 2-3 weeks. CTS-V brakes put out prodigious amounts of dust....this stuff really helps. Try it on your RDX wheels.

where does brake dust come from?

certainly not the rotor.
could it come from the pads!?

why yes, the pads.
change the pads to a ceramic pad and kiss your wheel washing days good bye.
ceramic pads still emit dust, albeit a softer colored dust.

Wow! I'll give that a try! Thanks.

And just for the sake of accuracy, I use Glass Plus, not Windex. Just didn't know if anyone would recognize it. I use Glass Plus for everything.

Still, I haven't heard anyone comment on how bad the RLX brakes are about dusting ... ?

Ceramic pads are the best solution and have good braking power.

interesting, the one thing I noticed about my RLX that was different from my 3G TL (6-speed manual) is the dramatic reduction in brake dust. I rarely get it on my RLX.

The stock pads may be ceramic.

I use the following to clean my wheels (3G TL) and they come out really well: Sonax Wheel Cleaner, Wheel woolies, Daytona speed master. In the warmer months I'll just wash them with a good quality soap when I can wash the car more often. Once cleaned put a good sealant on there - Blackfire Wet Diamond, Zaino, Opti-Coat, etc - and they will become a breeze to clean. Good luck.

I use a product called Wheel Wax. Keeps the dust to a minimum. Whatever dust does stick wipes off easily.

Strange...My G/F's RDX does not have any issue with brake dust in the 6 years she's owned it.

If she's had it for 6 years it's a 1st Gen, and the 2nd Gen apparently has different brakes. They're excellent brakes, but dusty as heck.

Resurrecting this old thread to thank NeuronBob for the tip on Armorall Wheel Protectant.

I used some a couple weeks ago, and in spite of rain and ice and sleet, the wheels look surprisingly good. A little dirty, of course, but not near as bad as I would have expected. And brake dust hasn't been as bad as it was at first.

I have to add my endorsement to this product. Thanks, Bob!
