Can alignment be done at any local auto shop?

I would think it is a standard four wheel alignment.

I believe there is a software routine needed to 'zero' out the system. I cannot recall whether it necessitated having the dealers laptop connected to do it (I recall that it was hooked up, not sure if it's reqired). I've wondered if a car that has the ability to actively change toe on the fly actually needs much alignment? Wouldn't it 'self align' as you drive?
