RDX In-Cabin Engine Noise

I read that the new RDX has followed the trend of piping engine noise into the cabin.
I know some like it, but I dont like it (passed on a Stinger because the piped in engine noise was giving me a headache!)

Does anyone know if this noise can be turned off completely in the RDX?

I was under the impression the engine sound amplification only took place in Sport+ mode, can anyone confirm?

I wouldn't like it either. Near the very bottom of her review this reviewer mentions the noticeable noise in the A-Spec and mentions pulling a fuse in other car models to disable it. She doesn't mention if it was only in Sport+ mode or not.

The noise is amplified in Sport and Sport plus, as per several reviews. I believe it applies to all trim levels - most certainly in the ASpec.

Does that mean that in those modes it CANNOT be disabled?
If someone can confirm whether its only in those modes, that would be helpful as well.

Thank you.

Download the Owner's Manual from owners.acura.com and search the settings menus. If there's no setting, chances are it can't be disabled. I'm not convinced there would be a separate fuse for faux engine noise. Maybe for the whole noise cancellation/modification system.

I pick up my new toy, er car, er SUV, tomorrow, so I'll report back after some "saddle time". I agree that reviewers said it's in Sport and Sport+ modes, and that's consistent with what I observed in test drives. IIRC It was only obvious during hard acceleration, and I didn't find it objectionable. The tonal quality is sporty, not tinny or harsh.

Here is a link to an article that supposedly tells you how to deactivate the system on a TLX. https://tiremeetsroad.com/2018/03/12...iped-speakers/

If the new RDX has a similar set up, it appears that you cannot just turn off the system.

You are correct. Sport+ mode will amplify engine noise. I think comfort mode will provide you a quite cabin.

It is controlled by software, should be optional to turn off in a settings menu (but probably not an option)....not everyone needs amplified vroom vroom sounds when they are carving the turns

One thing i noticed that was the feeling of mode selection fob was bad. It did not give you a crisp feedback when you turn it. I cannot describe how it feels like in words but definitely not the feeling people think it would be. Anyway, i am picking up a Canyon Bronze Metallic Tech Package on Thursday...

I was wondering who'd be the first to buy an RDX in Blazing Poop Mica. Congrats!

lol...because I wanted to try something different especially interior color. I have Modern Metallic Gray with Ebony one and I wanted to try parchment interior which looks very good to me over espresso one. Acura does not offer to many exterior options with Parchment. Poop mica does not look bad at all when you see it in person. Lol

I bought new in 2004 a TL in Desert Mist. I read somewhere only 2% of people owned that color. It had a parchment and black interior and I put a dark brown pinstripe on it. I thought it looked very nice. I will say I only saw 3 others in the 6 years I owned that car..I still see one here and there. I loved that TL..Totaled it in 2010..DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE!

Not noisy

I drove an aspect today on a back road In sport+ and although it was evident, it wasn’t obnoxious. With the windows up and radio off I had a conversation with the rep and then made a call to see if people heard it in the background and it was fine. It’s a corny little trick if you ask me but it definitely adds to the fun on the back roads.

Has anyone been able to verify whether this can be deactivated completely vs minimized based on mode selection?

I'd love to be able to drive in Sport without the fake noise....

Thanks.

Still researching this but I found information on another acura forum that showed how to disable this on a sedan, I think a tlx from 2015. It amounted to unplugging a connection found below the passenger side seat. There’s evidently a computer of some sort there that controls this feature. I doubt it’s that easy with the rdx but it looks like a matter of time before someone hacks the car and figures it out.

Does anyone know... Is it true that the engine piped in noise is enhanced louder in the ASpec vs the Advanced?

I just drove an ASpec and I'm pretty sensitive to the sound. Gives me a headache...

I don’t like piped-in sound, period. We should always have an option to turn it off.

i would be interested to see what you think of that color “up close and personal” after a few weeks. We had a ‘15 TLX in Black Copper Pearl, a rare color. We were happy to get that color and the dealer was happy to get rid of it. Without going back to the Acura website, it appeared that the only cars available with Parchment interior were your color and red.

Agreed, and in this case it may keep me from getting the car.

Im going to look into whether the Advanced is as pronounced as the A-Spec and certainly eager to hear if anyone figures out a way to disable it completely.

I can confirm that in the A-Spec model, the piped in engine noise is noticeable even in Comfort Mode.
Dont know about other trims.

As a BMW owner of an oldish car, I get invites all the time. One of the test drives seemed to have that phony engine noise real prominent. WTF is that I asked? The rep seemed to be proud of the enhanced noise, and went on about it. I asked if you could turn it off, and he said, why? It sounds so cool. I said because it isn’t real, and it is annoying. The rest of the ride went in relative silence.

So the answer seems to be no. You can’t turn that crap off.

i think the a spec is louder overall because it lacks the insulation (insulated glass) that the advanced has. The piped in noise may not be any louder in and of itself, but the cabin in the advanced will be quieter because of the insulated glass. So I’m other words less road noise but you’re still getting the piped in sound. I don’t know if they “tune” it any differently for each trim level but that is a possibility. Either way the advanced should be quieter overall with more insulation and active dampers taking out more road noise.

For the record, the cabin was very quiet. Very little road noise but a lot of fake engine noise.

It’s not fake engine noise, it’s the car’s engine sounds in enhanced form.

yes and no....it’s the actual cars prerecorded engine sounds played in a reverse phase format to create the effect of a linear engine rev through the rpm ranges. Basically it filters out unwanted junky noise a normal engine makes and replaces it with ear friendly engine sounds so that you don’t go “ew this sounds like shit when I get on the throttle.”

they do this in almost every performance car these days including mustangs, Porsche, even Lamborghinis.

And it changes when you change the Dynamic Drive Mode...sounding different with each. In general...it does not sound good at all. In the TLX it sounds pretty cool...a low "growl" and that is workable. The RDX
sounds just end up being "noise." and not that great to listen to. IMHO.

Anyone know the easiest way to defeat that system??? Meaning, shut it off completely?

I asked my dealer about this.
He looked into it and told me he is pretty sure their service apartment can deactivate it, but it requires working with the electronics.
Didnt explain anything more than that.

this trend is annoying. If I want real engine noise I will get a Mustang V8 and really hear the exhaust. They are adding all this sound deadening and insulated glass to only pipe in artificial or enhanced noise. If they are going to do it then make an easy option in the setttings to turn it off.

I certainly hope that they do this free of charge - if not, I would suggest making part of the purchase and sale agreement. I know I will
However, many vehicles have code or sequence to access the "technician screen" in infotainment system that gives access to more settings - that will likely surface on the forums in coming weeks and months if it is possible.

That is a true point.
I was close to purchasing a Kia Stinger but passed because of the piped in engine noise.
Many cars do it now - and many dont allow you to deactivate it.
It seems there is usually a way to do it (and people have managed to do it on past Acura models) but someone needs to figure out the trick on this one...

On the TLX and other Acuras with the last generation infotainment system, there was a way to get into the developer menu and turn it off.

Thread: TLX ANC thread

Maybe something similar can be done in the new RDX.
Someone will be able to find the physical module and unplug it. Some even say their music sounds better.

I'm not interested because I don't want to disable the noise cancellation functionality and because I don't find the engine sound at all annoying.

Some manufacturers, you just pull the fuse for the sound. Not sure if Acura has a separate fuse for the engine noise. Someone could probably just check the fuse box labels to see.
