Asking for a deposit is a way to try to get you to feel as though you have decided to purchase that car. It's a little trick to try to get your subconscious to say "Hey, I gave them money, so I guess I'm buying it."

People think that all deposits are returned if you don’t buy the car. It ain’t necessarily so.

Many consumers are under the false impression that there is a law which entitles them to a refund for a car deposit if they choose not to buy the car.

There is no such law.

Car deposits are non-refundable, unless the contract or sales receipt specifically contains a refund policy.

Before signing on the dotted line or making a deposit, inquire what the dealership's policy is. If the contract does not contain a refund policy on car deposits, you may request one be written in the contract, or be written on an addendum attached to the contract.

I seem to remember my questioning why it says "N/A," but don't remember the explanation.

Several things I've read say that that cost is always passed on to the customer.

TrueCar: "When you buy a new car, you should expect to pay a destination or freight fee. This is what the manufacturer charges the dealer to ship a new car onto the dealership lot. This is a fixed cost for the dealer and is always passed on to the customer."

Autotrader: "Let's get the bad news out of the way first: That destination charge listed on every new car's window sticker is something you'll have to pay. According to U.S. law, car delivery -- transporting the vehicle from port or assembly plant to dealer showroom -- is always listed as a separate line item on a new-car window sticker. Automakers may use different names to describe it, but it always works the same way, with buyers covering the cost."

KBB: "The fee is usually in the neighborhood of $400 — $800 per vehicle and no amount of negotiating will make it go away."

KBB (same article): "It's Government Mandated. The destination fee should be regarded as yet another cost of doing new car business. There are several other fees that manufacturers must bake into the price of their new cars and trucks, but the U.S. government has required this fee be itemized on the sticker based on the fact that it is a direct cost, above and beyond the 'overhead' companies must incur in bringing a product to market."

Interpret all this as you wish...
This is not brain surgery! Delivery Dest. Fees ARE part of the MSRP of the vehicle. IT'S NOT NEGOTIABLE! The total price of the car is negotiable, but, in that price IS the Delivery Fee of $995 in the case of the RDX.
The dealers have to pay that to Acura.

So for anyone here to say they didn't have to pay it....they just don't understand.

It is on the Purchase Order.....WITHIN the "Price of the Vehicle." Because it IS part of the MSRP on the bottom of the Window Sticker....the total price of this vehicle!

Do you mind breaking down that down a little. It's OK if you don't want to... To me, the "walk out the door" price does NOT include trade or cash or both -- so without a bit more information, it's hard to tell how good that is..

you could be in Oregon and pay no sales tax or in Washington and pay almost 9%. So the break out really matters.

Agree. And, honestly, if a down payment and trade-in is already factored in and you still end up only $400 south of $50K...woo, sounds kinda rough to me.

Here's my example scenario on a Fathom Blue Pearl Advance SH-AWD:

$47,400.00 (MSRP)
-$1,000.00 (Acura Loyalty discount)
-$750.00 (Military [Veteran] discount)
= $45,650.00 (final "out the door" offer)
+$2,739.00 (Maryland sales tax)
+$2,0000.00 (Accessories)
-$28,500.00 (Trade-In)
-$15,000.00 (Down payment)
= $6,889.00 (Remainder to finance?)

This is before any negotiating down from MSRP or other possible incentives by the time I'm ready to go. Of course, the trade-in value I stated is an informed estimate. I also forgot whether MD sales tax is applied AFTER you subtract the trade-in.

Sounds like the Arlington dealer I bought from after they dropped the add on items off the price. They didn't have the market adjustment though. I bought the all season floor mats and the cargo mat for $200.
The N2 price was a joke and they didn't hesitate taking it off. The pre delivery check made me wonder what they actually did as the tires were at 41psi.

NJ Luxury Tax $185.91?

I don't think that actually exists.

I got better offers from both Park Ave Acura in Maywood/Rochelle Park and from Ramsey Acura in Ramsey if you're willing to go further north. I bought from Park Ave because I always buy and service there.

They don't play games with add-ons.

OK - thanks! Wow, that's a lot of taxes and fees. Maryland's a little lower overall, I think. I have specialty plates that will just be transferring to the new car so the fee will be lower than if I were getting brand new plates. The selling price is not too bad, IMO.

Still, I can understand your wife's thought process...lol. Although, personally, I've sworn off leases. Not my cup of tea, but it works for many people...

Sorry, I can't remember the sales associate's name and he's not listed on their website. When I was leaving for Park Ave, the sales manager, Chuck Lomolino tried to convince me to buy from them. They were all low-pressure.

I had a trade in which became a factor in the cost and tax.
I got the SH-AWD Tech model; not Advance.

Sticker was $43,895.
Got $1,000 loyalty even though I was paying cash instead of financing.
They took off an extra $500 and gave me an extra $1,000 on trade.

It ended up being $24,171 out the door.
If you add back the $20,000 trade-in and $1,325 tax, it would be $45,496 out the door.
Add $4,900 + tax for Advance and you're looking at over $50K.

Probably you can do better. That was the first week on sale and they had a ton of 2018s left. Most of those are gone now.

That is exactly what I wrote some previous posts back then .. Costco does not have any dealer offering the discount for the 2019 RDX . All you get is just a teaser Invoice price , which amounts to nothing , until you can Locate a Costco dealer to give you the discounted price

The NJ luxury tax is a thing.

Luxury & Fuel Inefficient Vehicle Surcharge
Effective July 15, 2006, new car dealerships are responsible for collecting a 0.4% surcharge on the new sale or lease of vehicles priced $45,000 or greater or on vehicles having an EPA rating of less than 19 miles per gallon. Payment of the surcharge which is due on the 20th of the month following each quarter, will be paid online. The first filing will be in October, 2006 for the third quarter.

If you have any other questions regarding the surcharge and the issuance of vehicle titles in New Jersey, please contact the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for additional information.

Yep, At least for the time being. USAA- same thing. Hopefully, in a few months, it will be a different story. The 2018’s are selling...there’s just lots of them.

What could possibly be the other upfront charge of 1099.85? So these numbers look good?

Yesterday I got a call from a local dealer that I had purchased from previously saying they would give me the money I was asking for on my trade and the discount we discussed. So he sent me an email with the numbers as we agreed and I purchased. My 2014 RDX was getting high in mileage and I wanted to avoid the hit when you get to 100K in mileage. Regarding the discount we didn't really discuss what was being offered but he just agreed to give me the $2500 discount after I had requested the $3K initially. Since I had a trade it makes my deal more difficult for me and I am sure if I had waited until Nov/Dec I could have saved money on the car price but not the trade. I would have been over the $100K mile mark and this is why I rushed to purchase this car now.

2019 RDX Advance FWD - Gunmetal Metallic / Ebony Interior

MSRP: $46,395.00
Purchase Price $43,895.00
Discount $2500 ( Likely includes the usual $1000, $750 military discount and any other crap they wanted to offer.)
Trade: $15,000 (2014 RDX Tech)
Registration:$263.72
Taxes: $1805.94
DOC Fees $199
Title $69.72

Cargo Cover = Included
Folding Cargo Tray = Included

Regarding the discount we didn't really discuss what was being offered but he just agreed to give me the $2500 discount after I had requested the $3K initially. Since I had a trade it makes my deal more difficult for me and I am sure if I had waited until Nov/Dec I could have saved money on the car price but not the trade. I would have been over the $100K mile mark and this is why I rushed to purchase this car now.

NOPE!!! I met with them on Saturday and they had a stick up their you know what. They seems to think they are the only player in the game. It was really a short visit over there. My wife asked why didn't I try them initially and I told her it is just a waste of time. I wanted the Pearl White w/ Espresso interior since my wife wanted to change up the color. Oh well, she likes the Gunmetal now.

I drove it home as the car had just came in when he called me. He called around noon and I went over at 6 PM to give them time to get it ready. I was out the door exactly at 7:12 PM.

Congrats! I picked mine up at John Eagle. Sterling McCall is closer to my house but their sales group has gone way downhill. I had bought 4 Acura's from Sterling but the new sales team were foolish and let me walk, John Eagle treated me right

98K so i was running out of time. KBB and Edmunds had it valued at $11k. I took it to Carmax and they only offered $11,700 and another online site offered $11,400 so I accepted this offer as I would have not recovered well.
