I've made it clear in other posts that I'm definitely not a fan of extended warranties. However, with all the new tech and turbocharged cars coming out recently, it might not be a bad idea. FI engines are inherently less reliable due to increased stress and pressure, not to mention the addition of a component that spins at several 10's of thousands of RPM's, gets super hot, and is known to wear out bearings over time. This is also the initial release of a new gen which adds to the chance of breakdowns.

Assuming the price is reasonable, I would definitely consider it.

Doesnt power train have longer warranty if you worried about turbo? Ive never bought extended warranties and in all occasions I saved money. 1st gen turbo was very reliable, Honda knows how to make reliable turbos. Thats one of the reasons I buy Honda is so I dont have to buy extended warranty....

Standard MSRP warranty that I have on my spec sheet is 4 yr/50K miles limited warranty and 6 yr/70K power train. For these time frames, what does an extended warranty give you for the money you pay beyond the manufacturers warranty that comes with the purchase? Does it cover repairs outside what is termed limited on the standard warranty? If the extended warranty gives you little of anything in the overlap with the standard warranty is it more cost effective to wait at least a couple of years to purchase one. I have never had an extended warranty on a vehicle, so this is new turf for me. Thanks in advance.

Put me down on the "yes" side. Learned that lesson a long time ago with a 2000 Odyssey when a few items failed a few months past the warranty period. Since then all my cars have had Nav systems and other tech. I've had to use the extended warranty twice since then, and the repair savings more than paid for the warranties. Plus, they are transferrable, or you can get a portion of the remaining warranty back on trade-in.

My advice is to shop the internet and just buy from one of the volume dealers. I've used Curry in the past and have been very pleased with them.

Good Luck!

I don't know if you re familiar with the technology, and I don't want to alarm you, but are you familiar with Direct Injection engines and some of the long-term issues? It might be worth Googling if you are interested.

If I owned a DI engine I'd be running this through the throttle body pretty frequently.

Good article. Definitely check the fine print. There are all sorts of loopholes in extended warranties. What they consider "wear and tear" for example. Nearly anything can be contributed to wear and tear. Oil leaks, turbo failures, burning oil, etc. Treat it like a major purchase even though it's not tangible. Scrutinize the heck out of the policy and ask lots of questions before you sign.

I almost purchased a policy through Forever Car since I got a steep discount from Lyft. After reading the fine print I decided against it. Much of the wording was too vague. They could (not saying they would, only that they could...) deny a variety of claims for all sorts of reasons due to the arbitrary wording in the policy. It was enough to turn me away.

can the manufacturers extended warranty be bought at a later time? Before the 4 year 50k mile warranty expires?

To the best of my knowledge - yes. I also understand that the lowest premiums can be had when buying it during the first 3 to 6 months of buying the car, but have not independently verified that.

Yes, you can. Typically the car manufacturer sends you a mail letter stating your factory warranty is almost up and you can purchase an extended warranty. The downside is you lose all leverage of negotiating a lower price on the extended warranty if you initially bought it.

Curry sends you a quote with a variety of options. The one I would need - if I pull the trigger - is 120k/7yrs at $1910 for $0 deductible or $1805 with $100 deductible.

If I need an extended warranty with an Acura or any Asian car I bought the wrong car. Maybe on a German car, but even they have so many exclusions it is only for pure drivetrain major. Audi excludes electrical and lighting, well damn their LED headlights on the A6 are like $2600 each.
