Dash Cam / Radar Detector

Anyone have a recommendation for either a Dash Cam or Radar detector that doesn't suck, but also can be mounted in a low-profile way on the 2019 Advance? I like the stock interior...would prefer minimal intrusion from additional gadgets. Fairly flex on price, but don't want to spend a ton either.

Thanks!

You'll get a lot of varying opinions but the popular models will be the Valentine V1 and the Beltronics/Escort (same parent company) products. By mounting low-profile, I assume you either mean on the dash board or right under the mirror? On my TLX I purchased a Blend Mount for the mirror, and hardwired the radar into my fuse box, running the wires into the liner and down the A pillar.

V1 in my opinion is the bulkiest radar detector of them all. If you want to be undetectable by radar detectors, then get the Beltronics STi (which I have) or Escort Redline. I honestly don't think you need the GPS features or any of the other services the other products offer.

The blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control I will throw K-band signals, so that'll annoy you enough with false positives as well.

I just installed a Uniden R3 in my RLX. Prolly the best radar detector on the market and cheaper than the V1 or Escort Passport/Max 360. Though I do miss the arrows of the V1 and Max 360.

I want a R3 badly. I would love to mount under the mirror and power up near it.

I think, for now, the R3 is considered the best of the radar detectors. I use it in my Land Rover that is old enough not to have it's own BSM and the myriad of other radar'y safety features, so the only nuisance is the mostly-OK filtering of other peoples BSM, etc. Not sure how that thing would interact with my RDX with all its own safety radar features. No unit yet is perfect in filtering out that non-law enforcement stuff. My camera is a Garmin Speak with Alexa----technology included that works great in my non-tech Land Rover but overkill for the RDX.

Dashcam:

Some guy ended up bumping into my car in a garage and I was able to get his license plate in a dark-ish garage. It didn't ding my insurance premiums since I had evidence (video & images), and dinged is insurance instead. ATX0595.

Radar detector:

Waze App. But... there's an Escort IX available at Costco with a discount.

I know I could just wire the dash cam into a fuse but I’m wondering if the USB ports have power when the vehicle is off, if that’s the case I will just run the wires down to the USB port. Anyone know?

I believe the USB powers down when engine is off. They will be powered in accessory mode though.

You can do that but be aware that some dash cams become a bit unstable when using the USB ports for power. I've used a couple of different ones in my last three vehicles that weren't real happy with the USB power but would function without issue either hardwired or using a 12V to 5V adapter.

For those of you that hardwired, which fuse slot did you connect to? I tried different accessory ones and then my car started throwing me error codes for emissions.

either accessory one will turn on when the car is running, don’t turn the car on when the fuse is pulled, did you put the fuse you pulled out into the fuse tap?

Someone took a pic of the fuse panel connections using a fuse tap for both ACC and 12V constant. If you cannot find it I will happily take a pic and post it later today. The fuses I used were located in the sub panel that has the relays on the top and fuses on the bottom to the right of the main panel. Working like a champ and zero issues.

This one will turn on when the car has the accessories powered and is the lowerer amperage accessory of the two, the other is 15-20 amp I believe

I used two fuses for both 12V constant and 12V ACC in the small panel to the right of the silver box with the three large black relays on it. If you want to use PARKING MODE you need to use my set-up. I used one of the nuts you can easily see to pull my ground connection.

This is the perfect advertisement for a dash cam that works when you are parked. Paid for itself.

Amen Brother! A dash cam without parking mode is worthless IMPO. Doesn't take much to make parking mode work and adds no additional difficulty to the installation. If you buy the Power Magic Pro interface with your camera, it's $19.99...separate its like $50...very small price to pay either way.
