I am considering buying a new RDX. With similar SUVs, I am used to having a privacy cover to completely hide the cargo area. I notice that the RDX does not include one as standard (booo!).
I'd appreciate hearing owner's comments as to whether they feel a cargo cover is necessary to protect from peering eyes, or if the tinting is sufficient.
I've had SUVs with cargo covers for almost 20 years, and I never used them. They would always be in the way, especially when hauling a bulky item, and I always seemed to pull them out when traveling to make more room. AS MTD said, the window tint makes it hard to see inside anyway. I think I even have one stored in my garage attic from a vehicle I had years ago, and I forgot about the cover when I traded it in.
Plus, with the 2019, there is plenty of storage space under the floor to hide something if the need arises.

So, we decided to just get a big enough black cloth to cover anything we want to be covered, and stow it under the floor when not needed. We decided that. Haven't done it yet, but that is what we decided. We never carry stuff back there anyway except for when we travel, so before the next trip, there will be a piece of black cloth.
Since I generally have a set of golf clubs in back throughout the spring/summer/fall I prefer the cover. Easy enough to remove on those rare occasions when I might need the additional space. Glass is not dark enough to prevent someone from seeing what's back there if they're really intent on peering in. Plus having the cover just makes the interior look a bit neater than having a big open space back there with 'stuff' in it. My opinion, which is no better or worse than that of others when it comes to subjective matters.
I've had them in the past and bought one for my 2016 RDX. I don't have my 2019 RDX yet but have purchased the cargo cover already!! In addition to what's been said, I like it as a sunshield for when we have groceries in the back, or other things that don't need extra sun like wine, etc. The added privacy is an obvious plus as well. I notice the new one is much lighter than my current one which will make removal easy when necessary.
I also have golf clubs in the cargo area during golfing season. I’m on my 2nd RDX now hoping to trade in for 2019 model. I’ve always had the cargo cover and will get one again. Just my preference.
To me, its worth it to keep prying eyes away from items in the back. The tinting is NOT sufficient. Acura should include it as part of the accessories at no extra charge like many other lower end cars including their own CRV,

I have a 6 foot by 8 foot heavy duty black tarp that works well. It can be folded and put on the floor of the back to put mulch bags on, keep it clean at the beach, camping etc. It can be laid over objects and blocks vision into the back since it is black and makes the back look like a void through the tinted windows.. Plus it has grommets every 18 inches around the edges so a rope can be threaded through it and tied to the corner anchors and woven through an item like a desk to keep it stable during transport. Only cost about $12. I have a second one to cover a grill secured with small bungee cords. Supposedly UV tolerant so it won't crumble like most covers. No I don't get paid to advertise these, but it seems like a better more flexible solution than a cargo cover. It stores easily folded in the wells in the back of the vehicle.
It may or may not be sufficient for security purposes (i.e. prying eyes, cargo privacy) but a cargo cover will help prevent small flying objects from the cargo area onto passengers in hard breaking situations or collisions ...
Cargo covers should be mandatory for safety reasons in my not so humble opinion ...

Text books on the back seat present the same exposure, but your point is taken. I tie large items down with rope using the anchors and put small items in the storage well in the cargo area. Locking plastic tubs come in all sorts of sizes to secure small objects also.

I bought one and want to install it on my 2019 Acura RDX. How did you get the covers off on the side panels? Can you take a picture of where the cover slides into please.

Open the tailgate and look at the grooves on the inside side panels!
The 1G RDX had the most elegant solution for the cargo cover EVER. It was a hard cover that when you aren't using can be placed on the bottom of the cargo area and it sits flush with the floor. Amazing for when you neee the extra height. It also was attached to the cargo door and went up and down with the door when installed.
So we bought one panel of a blackout drape, in dark brown, with built-in grommets for a curtain rod. A couple of S-biner clips, and it covered our trunkfull on a long drive. When we got here, it folded up neatly and stowed away.

We really appreciated and made use out of the hard cover that provided the option for a dual-level trunk in the CR-V. Ours was an '07 - not sure which years offered this. It was really versatile and convenient. It also provided privacy for items below the cover.
I was disappointed to not find any models with this feature when car shopping last year.
I had a "window shade" for my Pilot. After the first few months of it just getting in the way, I removed it and put it in the garage. It's been there ever since.
Whether they're necessary or not is a matter of personal preference since there are alternatives, for me it's more convenient than using a tarp or other makeshift cover. Also, for me anyhow, it makes the interior look neater no matter if there's anything in the luggage/cargo area or not. I would be more convenient if it attached to the rear hatch versus the side panels but that's a bit of nit-picking.
For those that have the cargo cover, is anyone able to notice if it makes any difference in road noise with the cover closed? I've tried sound deadening in the doors and different tires without much improvement and would give this try if someone thinks it helps.

As I stated previously in this thread (which I posted about a week before I got my RDX), I had the rollout cargo cover in my Pilot. It rattled and made noise open or closed. It did nothing to deaden noise, especially from the guy I had bound and gagged back there.
Whenever I carry guns, drugs, large amounts of cash or people parts, I just throw a blanket over.

I know I'm probably grasping at straws here but I was just curious if anyone with this cover in their RDX could notice any difference in road noise with the cover open and closed.
The only reason I ask is that Alex on Auto's mentioned that a cargo cover might make a small difference in noise on a car he was testing. Not a Pilot or RDX though.

agree. It felt like a downgrade for the 3rd gen RDX. Hard cover was nicer
I really like the cargo cover and use it all the time; removing it only to haul my Winter tires/wheels or Summer tires/wheels to the tire shop for installation.
I feel like it does block a small amount of road noise but, that could be a placebo effect.
I get a bigger impact from heavy, thick Lloyd’s Luxe mats on the floors and cargo area. The other thing that blocks road noise is closing the moonroof shade but, I prefer the natural light to the quiet.
Better to increase the volume on the audio system.
It was part of the deal I made, along with all weather mats, cargo liner and storage box,
Never used cargo cover, use cargo box on back seat for all loose stuff that
would normally be on backseat and floor. When I need backseat, I pull out the
cargo box which leaves plenty of room.
