Backup Camera Question on 2019 RDX

Weird and possibly stupid question, but bear with me.

I want to ask owners, especially owners of the Advanced package, about the backup camera, specifically the trajectory guidelines. Months ago, I test drove an Audi Q5 and a BMW X3 and when backing up, the camera would show guidelines and those guidelines would curve when the steering wheel was turned. In my abbreviated test drive of a 2019 RDX-Tech, I was parked and put the car in R and when I turned the steering wheel, it looked as though the guidelines just "bent" rather than "curve". In the Q5 an X3, the guidelines looked like they were "painted on the ground" and when the steering wheel was turned and the car was backed up, the lines curved exactly like they were still painted on the ground in a curve which represented the path the car would take with respect to how much the steering wheel was turned. In the RDX the guidelines at first appeared to be "painted on the ground", but when I turned the wheel, the guidelines turned orange and just seemed to bend sharply near the bumper and shoot off to the side of the image in a rather straight fashion, making it look like it "lifted off the ground" in the image. It was very weird, but maybe I didn't get a good enough look at it since the salesperson was in a rush to get the keys back to the lockup as the dealership was closing. The real test would be to back into a parking spot between two cars. So far no dealers in my area have any advance packages to drive.

I'm not sure if I'm getting my idea across clearly, but can any owners comment? I drove a Tech package and I know the Advance has a slightly different screen presentation due to the 360 surround cameras.

The resolution of the image was pretty bad as I've read in many places, like they're using a VGA resolution and zooming it to HD. Is the Advance camera the same (I'm thinking it most likely is).

Thanks for any insights..Ed

Here are some pix I found on the net to illustrate the differences I was trying to say in my original post (can't seem to edit the post due to my newness)

This is from an Audi A4, note how the trajectory lines look painted on the ground and trace the exact path the car will travel.

This is from the Acura.com site regarding the 2018 RDX, but is the same as I remember from my short test drive of a 2019 RDX Tech. Note how the trajectory lines seem to just tilt off to the right and looks lifted from the ground as though the car will travel up a banked curve. Look at the dotted line which I believe shows the tailgate opening clearance, it looks like the car is tilted and leaning to one side. It's probably just me, but I find this a bit disorienting and potentially inaccurate (or I should say cause me to inaccurately judge clearance).

My 17 RDX Advance does the tilting as well. It's part of the system.

lol looks like someone at Acura can't do vector calculation. this is 2019 for pete's sake.... Even Hyundai Santa Fe has better implementation than Acrua's.

It's little details like this that started to chip away the allure of 2019 RDX for me.... making going back to Acura harder and harder....

In 2019 RDX the reverse trajectory lines look like they are painted on the ground, and they curve. I backed into a parking space today, matching the projected vectors with the painted lines on the pavement, and slid right in. My 22yo daughter sitting next to me said: "that's like cheating...".

The lines do NOT look like what is pictured above from 2018 RDX, at least not for my 2019 Advance.

Wander,

When you get a chance could you post a pic of the backup trajectory lines? In my short test drive, I didn't actually back it into a parking spot, but I just shifted to reverse and turned the wheel and could have sworn what I saw was very much like the picture I found on Acura.com. Maybe it was the view mode I was in, isn't there several views available - normal, wide and down?

Thanks

I'm not sure what the problem is or what the OP thinks the problem is. If it's something that will affect your buying decision, I suggest you ask to test drive an Advance again with an emphasis on the camera system. Remember the camera system in the Advance is different from the other trim packages.

The only pics I have are from this thread about my busted-ass system, which has since been fixed.

If I have some time today, I'll go out in the parking lot and take a few more pics. (can't promise)

The lines work for me, I can’t really care if it is a Rembrandt or a Rockwell. The lines are there, and I don’t hit stuff.

I had a BMW because this and their rear camera implementation is head and shoulders above the RDX's.

Several issues with the RDX's rear camera (just the Tech pack here, not Advance so can't comment on that)
- No way to have camera on when moving forward. This is useful when "straightening up" in a parking spot.
- It doesn't show the curved lines and the straight line at the same time.
- The side lines are not accurate, in the sense they aren't showing exactly where the tires are.
- Practically unusable in the rain, which is a real bummer given the blind spots in the rear.

None of these are a big deal, but it just means it's not as user friendly.

Anyone know if there's a HD drop-in you can get to replace the stock camera?
