Another way to power Dash Cam

Hi All,

Just took delivery of my RDX A-Spec yesterday after trading in my '11 MDX. Needed to install the dash cam and wanted a closer power source than the fusebox.
Anyway, I did something similar on my MDX and it worked well. I could have drilled a small hole for the power cable to pass thru for a cleaner install but didn't want to be destructive.
I won't see the wire from the driver's seat anyway.

Just above the mirror, there's a cover and when you remove the cover there's a wiring harness that supplies power to the mirror for the garage opener and the auto-dimming.
The black connector has a small push tab and then pulls away from the white connector. The black connector is the mirror, the white connector gets fed from the dome light assembly.

Wiring scheme as follows:

On the Black Connector:
Black wire - Negative (-) common
Red wire - Accessory (+12v) - this is on only when the car is started or in accessory mode
Yellow wire - Constant (+12v) - always on
Green wire - weird one.. +12v whenever headlights are on, this includes when you lock/unlock the car and the headlights come on for a few seconds.

Obviously for the dash cam, I chose the Black/Red wire.

I figured that harness was useable but didn’t want to cut into any factory harnesses in case of warrenty issues

Why not use the yellow wire and have footage in case you get hit when parked?

It'll kill the battery if it sits for any length of time. Many dash cams have batteries to film for a time after turning the car off.

It looks like you need that separate box accessory to prevent full battery drain. While nice, it won't fit behind the rear view mirror.

the one I got you could fit it under that plastic cover that the rear view mirror goes into, lots of space in there, one way around cutting the factory harness would be to make your own that intercepts the harness there, would need a plug that it can plug into and a plug that can plug into the factory spot and have your extra wire come out from the middle

Thanks for the pic
Do you have suggestion to convert the 12V to 5V for use in the dash cam? I know blackvue is 12V but mine is 5V.
Will the extra power drain to the wire cause problem? It's probably pulling at least 5-10W.

Personally, I do not like tapping into the mirror as you lose a KEY feature of all dash cams...PARKING MODE. I installed mine without drilling any holes for any wiring to pass through and mine is mounted in a similar situation. Mine goes straight to a Power Magic Pro for Parking Mode operation and then into the fuse panel using fuse taps. Look at the dash cam thread and you will see a few installs including mine.

Yes, this is another way but it is NOT the best or preferred method for a dash cam to receive power. Most incidents happen when a car is left parked and unattended.

I usually use d-sub pins to tap into mirror connectors. For some reason I can't get it to fit snug into the connector. Any suggestions?

noob question here...what exactly is OP suggesting? Would I need to cut/splice wires for this install? Not sure I follow from schematics explanation -> installed dashcam.

Hi, no I didn't use the taps. I'm a believer of splicing and soldering. So I just stripped the I insulation away wrapped the additional wire around the stripped area and soldered.
It's the most secure way.

Do you have a picture to show how you wired at the end? you put t-tap on the black and red wires and connect to the cam cable?
