Angry Android Auto, wherefore art thou Android Auto

I just read the owners manual cover to cover, saw Apple Carplay, but no Android Auto.

There is no Android Auto on the RDX at launch. They said it may come a few months later via an update. I wouldn't hold my breath for this to happen quickly. My bet would be early 2019 before it gets enabled.

Say it isn't so! The OS in the car is Android based! Heck, the TLX has Android Auto! Ugh......

From what I've read about it through the early reviews - Google is still figuring out how to marry the software with the somewhat unique nature of the control system in the RDX. Apple basically just said whatever but google is apparently thinking about it a little bit.

Yes, I think it's because the "absolute positioning" touchpad is a new and unique interface, and there isn't an appropriate driver. As for Apple CarPlay, the developers just used the driver for a laptop style touchpad, which functions differently. This is not ideal, to put it mildly.

Someone mentioned dealers are getting training for Android auto now. If that is true we should get the update very soon.

I posted this in another thread, but this seems more relevant here:
If it helps, the three dealers I spoke to all gave different answers on when AA is being implemented- no idea, Nov-Dec 2018, and after Google I/O provides an AA update in the summer of 2019.

Not for nuthin’, but ‘wherefore’ means ‘why’, or ‘for what reason’, not ‘where’.

Good point about wherefore! Moderator, please retitle this thread "Whither goest Android Auto?"

I'm also wondering when the Android Auto update will arrive. I've never been a fan of smart TVs, because manufacturers are always changing their interfaces on new models and basically abandoning old models. Car "infotainment" (wherefore did we allow this word into the language?) systems seem similar. I'd rather just connect a streaming device like a Roku to a non-smart TV, and there should be a similar solution for these car systems, without the need to wait for model-specific support from Google and Apple. Oh well. In a few years we'll probably be griping about our infotainment systems not working with our new phones. At least these cars still have AUX jacks!

I get your point. My prior car got outmoded well before it started to hit the point where repairs started to pile up.

At least Acura is working on it, after all this time Toyota is just now finally saying they will support Android Auto, they have up until now just ignored the Android Auto market.

maybe i'm in the minority here, but I'm not a terribly big fan of android auto.

I've tried it on an mdx and the interface for apple carplay seems a lot more usable to me.

I still want it so that I can have google maps show up, but I'd rather they just fix the communication between the hud and the center console so that the turn info is the same.

Take it for what it is worth, when I bought my 2020 RDX last week, the salesman said the Android Auto update is done and they are waiting for it to be pushed out to everyone.

Hear this shit regarding Infotainment Systems CarPlay as well as Android etc..... Over a year now and still waiting. Hire some decent programmers because who you have is not worth a shit and if its outsourced fire them and get another set of developers that actually can deliver.

Google has yet to release their new AA interface which supports new input controls. Google says sometime this summer. Once that happens, I anticipate the update to happen shortly after.

People still have many issues with usb connected android auto in every car. Just use the mobile version for now and enjoy it via bluetooth

Same goes for Apple Music. Forget CarPlay and use Bluetooth. its fairly reliable as glitches appear way less frequently. The bummer with this method vs CarPlay is that NO enhanced graphics or information. Just a basic CD player.

I do not expect to ever see AA for the RDX. When I bought mine, I was told several times that we'd be seeing AA any day now; that was over a year ago. Less that 2 years left on the lease and then... who knows

I think Android Auto will eventually come. All the next gen Acura vehicles will utilize the same touchpad infotainment interface. If Acura doesn’t put AA on the RDX then all Acura next gen vehicles won’t receive AA either.

Many other mainstream manufacturers already have AA. I’m pretty sure Acura will follow through.

I'm part of the class action suit regarding the infotainment system and had an interview yesterday where I spoke to the attorney's office about the promises of AA before & after I bought my rdx. I think it may be part of the amended filing for the class action.
I agree that it will probably come along at some point. To have a system running a Google platform software that can't use their car integration product seems like something neither side will want to let stand. But I think it's up to us to keep hounding them about it.

Don't hold your breath for AA. Google isn't sure that the currently installed hardware will work.

Unfortunately, this is the reason that my TSX may be my last Acura - not because the RDX doesn't have AA, but because of the constant promises.

I have it on good authority that there are a lot of issues getting AA to play with the touch pad. I would not be surprised if any plans for AA are scrapped now

Not sure if you guys looked at the other thread but you can side load Headunit reload to the RDX which gives you AA with some compromise.

Yes I did, but I am not willing to attempt that

If things go right, I will be done with my RDX headache by this Saturday morning

Guess you are trading in? What are you trading in for? How's the trade in value? I might start looking if I have another warranty visit, I'm like 5th or 6th time now. Kbb show about 31-32 for my tech, I wonder how realistic is that.

When Alex on Autos reviewed the RDX, he stated that "Google is still working on integrating it with the input method of this vehicle". Know that the new Android Auto is scheduled to release this summer which supports various input methods and widescreen, it is clear why there is no Android Auto yet. Google probably told Acura last year that the new AA version will come out "soon". It also explains why Acura cannot provide comments because they are not in charge of Google's release dates.

Just my theory of Android Auto. I am an Android fan boy and have seen people report so many problems with Android Auto in general that I feel like I am not missing out on much in this current version anyways.

Selling it back to the dealership I purchased it from for a good amount that will not cause me to lose money in the deal. I am looking at the Hyundai Palisade

Hey guys, have a look at the new spy pics released for TLX and MDX. It looks like there's a knob to the right of the touch pad. I wonder if this is integrated for Android Auto since well we know nothing is happening with the current system. Boy, I would be pissed if AA never makes it to your models. I have it in my car and while it's glitchy at times it's great to have. You can't beat google maps and responding to text via voice.

No, you're missing the point. The manufacturer promised something and doesn't deliver - AA, map updates etc.

This was when software meant a nice soft terry cloth towel.

And debugging meant rubbing the bumper with some solvent on the towel.

Yeah, those were the days.

What are you talking about? There is no knob. If you are talking about this picture, that is the Drive button for the transmission.
