10 Speed transmission recalled in Honda Vehicles

So I see there is an issue with the 10 speed transmission in the Honda odyssey where the TCU could reboot and the default behavior is to go into Park, which could happen while driving. This can severely damage the parking pawl. Is this a thing we have to worry about with the RDX since it uses the same transmission?

perhaps you should wait for official word; instead of relying on strangers that dont work for Honda/Acura

Here's Honda's official statement regarding the 10AT recall in the Odyssey.

https://hondanews.com/honda-corporat...-touring-elite

Here are more details from the NHTSA.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...9V299-2515.pdf

This issue does not appear to affect other models that use the 10AT including the Accord and RDX at this time.

I read the NHTSA report, and the problem is not with the transmission itself, but a poor electrical connection to the battery and how the TCU responds to a loss of power.

Since the TCU and its programming may be very similar in 2019 RDX, I didn't find this reassuring until I read the following section of the NHTSA release:

There is overlap with 2019 RDX production, but the software fix shouldn't be difficult to apply if applicable. Better than a wrecked transmission.

While I agree that we don’t know for sure if the RDX is affected, how do you get from this that there is overlap with 2019 RDX production? I just read this as similar Odyssey vehicles built after Jan 15.

I am curious with this fix, what happens if the car battery goes dead or is disconnected when it’s just sitting their parked, does it change to neutral? That would be just as bad

Good question. One would hope there is some logic, such as if in park, then stay in park, else shift into neutral.

i would hope so also but being in the software field myself sometimes things are not always thought out 😂

I only meant there is temporal overlap between production of affected Odysseys ( May 2017 - Jan 14, 2019 ) and production of 2019 RDXs ( June 2018 - present ).

Clearly, Honda was researching this issue for some time before they introduced revised software into Odyssey production in Jan 2019.

I would hope they would apply this to other potentially affected vehicles in a timely manner.

the parking prawl is a physical object.
if it breaks, and the parking brake is NOT set...the car will roll away...

redundancy redundancy redundancy.

if you are so worried, always use the parking brake...as that's another form of a physical stop..

then you dont have to worry about software failing. or code that wasnt tested for certain conditions

I tend to think that everyone is overthinking this. I always have my Parking Brake set when parked. AND we don't even know if the RDX is affected with this malady.

If the transmission tries to ram the parking pawl into the torque converter outer gear ring while the car is in motion, it will make a horrible noise.

If you have any awareness of what your car is doing, you will know something bad happened.

Honda is worried about the segment of the motoring public that doesn't have a clue.

It is for reasons like this that I now subconsciously always always put the parking break when parking. Regardless of if I'm on flat ground or incline...etc.

With due respect, WTF?

Don't present opinion as fact.

And curiosity is NOT a crime. It's the engine of discovery.

I wonder if that’s true. I’m going to do some research.
