“Heads”-Up Display?

Why do people say, or reviewers write, Heads-Up Display (HUD) instead of Head-Up Display? I don’t know too many drivers with more than one head (get your mind out of the gutter) and you only ever hear “heads up” at the golf course or baseball game.

I’ll save you a trip to the owner’s manual—it says Head-Up Display.

For the same reason people incorrectly say, "Daylight Savings Time" instead of "Daylight Saving Time".

Or "VIN number" (Vehicle Identification Number).

Or "DRL lights" (Daytime Running Lamps).

Or "CVT transmission" (Continuously Variable Transmission).

(Perhaps they work for the Department of Redundancy Department.)

And, why is their Braille on drive-up ATM's?

Yeah, those are also very good examples.

Well-played...”Department of Redundancy Department.”

We don’t “need” anything, not even that fancy car you’re driving. Unpucker your sphincter and move along. It’s not that serious.

Thought stewed4brains looking at the mirror, brushing his teeth then jumping in a forum to complain about someone’s random post before he had his first cup of morning joe. Just remember it’s Head-Up, not Heads-Up.

LOL… No wonder people say English is hard to learn. We first “languagers” (I made that up) do a good job butchering it, me included.

If we're going to discuss proper English then there and their should be used correctly.

I'd blame it on the spell check.

Admittedly, I had just crawled out of bed, hadn't had any coffee, and didn't have my glasses on, so I guess I should be thankful that it came out phonetically correct at least.

I remember in my old military days it was called head-up display or heads-up display depending if there were one or two pilots. I think both terms have become interchangeable today to mean exactly the same thing. The Apache AH-64 attack helicopter had a helmet mount display (HMD) with a single transparent eye piece over one eye and sensors on the helmet to track head movements for the 30mm gun aim. That was the original google glasses.

I think this might be one of those terms we all use; but, somehow evolved to new meaning from the original back in the day.
