Who owns company-branded stores?

Are they owned by the company whose name is on the sign (ie Sprint, Verizon, etc) or are they independent business owners who bought a franchise?

most sprint verizon nextel and att stores are own by the actual company(they only sell there own service and they have a big sign on the front of the store)...

there are alot of cingular stores as well as t-mobile stores that are branded and franchised out..(they say cingular or t-mobile on the front of the store and look like real stores but are privatley owned and they will only sell one carrier but beware these are 3rd party dealers)

and then they have the ones that carry every single carrier and are called cellular sluts these are just middle men and sell everything
