Verizon Push-To-Talk phones

Just got one from work and I don't really see the appeal of PTT. The delay seems too long and it seems easier to just call the person. Am I missing something? What's the advantage? Only 1 person can talk at a time.

what if you want to setup a conference call with 20 people, across the country, right away?

Ah! Good point. I guess I was only looking at it from the perspective that 3 of us got it at work and we sit in the same room.

TL_Diplomat,

no, nextel cannot do nationwide group calling.

you would have to get verizon wireless for this feature. plus you know ahead of time if the person you are going to PTT is available or not. again, not available on nextel. plus you can setup your own groups on a website, again, not available on nextel. plus, your phone number is your PTT number, only on verizon. plus, your phone works on the hands down largest, highest quality network in the country. plus, you get verizon's customer service ... what's better about nextel? the initial call setup time is faster on nextel. that is the only advantage. somebody think they know better?

Yes its nextel, but their patent expired so now its going to be seen at all the major cell providers. And of course each provider will be doing something different with it then the next guy.

what are you trying to say?

there are, never were, any relevant patents to PTT.

verizon wireless waited until it's 3G1X network was completed nationwide to launch PTT.

you will see others offerings from other providers, but it is not easy.

nextel's method of PTT is completely different than verizon's. again I say, patents do not apply.

I think the part about the patents is incorrect.

Why else would all the other cell phones companies be rushing to get the ptt feature around the same time. Especially when nextell has had the feature for years. And it just so happens that their patent regarding the feature expired.

Now maybe im just talking out of my ass based on ive been told, but till im proven wrong it all makes sense to me.

Edit- PS there methods of bringing you ptt may not be the same, but the technology providing it is.

the reason is because they did not have a method (read: technology) to do it.

nextel runs a technology called iDEN. it is mainly a PTT network, which "oh by the way" you can make cell phone calls on. that is why the PTT works well, and their cell service sucks.

verizon and sprint run CDMA, now they run CDMA 2000 (3G) which offers high speed data. This network upgrade was completed recently. the reason that PTT is being offered just now on verizon is because they needed the CDMA 2000 network to run the transport for the voice over IP for the OTT. att and cingular are upgrading to GSM/GPRS, which may give them enough bandwidth to do PTT with VoIP ... but we have yet to see it in the marketplace, and they may have to wait for EDGE.

the only similarity between nextel's PTT and verizon's PTT (and sprint/att/cingular/alltel's future offerings) is the end result. in a nutshell, nextel uses iDEN (truncated analog radio), verizon uses CDMA 2000 (voice sent as data packets).

nextel has no patents.

let me know if this helps clear up everything for you.

PTT stands for "Push to Talk" ... a service that has existed since World War 1. Back then they called it 2-way radios ... but the service has now been enhanced. Nextel has been offering "direct connect" service for the past 10 or so years. Verizon has thrown it's hat in the ring with it's Push to Talk service. You press a dedicated "PTT button" on the side of the phone, it brings up your buddy list, the you can choose to "barge" or "alert" an individual or group. The network then sets up the call and off you go.

Let me know if you would like more information.

You're my hero. But seriously what the fuck make the phone a little thinner. The current V60 PTT is a fucking beast. Do you know of them coming out with a smaller, color one.

You used to like it when you were 5 years old...

Now it's just a bunch of older people using it to respark their childhood...

Hehe, I wouldn't comment on this not even. Nextel is looking for anyway to sue somebody over PTT so take it FWIW. Obvioulsly there's a lot about this I can't say...

All I can say is Nextel doesn't own PTT any more than Sprint owns PictureMail or sending pictures from the handset to an online album or another handset.

Hehe, Verizon is "testing the waters". I'd rather get it "right" than get it first. Since when has Verizon been interested in sleek, shiny phones? It's the service....

Later.

fuck verizon and nextel. verizon's cheapest ptt plan is 40 bucks plus 20 for ptt making it 60 bucks and you cant do shareplans. Sprint is only going to be 5 buck on ANY plan and its going to have the fastest connection time, Period.

Full of shit? naw, only my cack

how do you figure they cant offer it for $5? they have unlimited pcs to pcs for $5 dollars a month. so ptt for $5 is completley doable.

well they are two completely different uses of their network, so the COST to sprint will be different. mobile to mobile is pretty cheap, since you utilize only your own voice network. since sprint will be doing PTT the same way as verizon (VoIP as siggy echoed my statement), it will utilize the 3G data network. 1 minute of airtime for a voice call (especially PCS to PCS) is a heck of a lot cheap than 1 minute of airtime for a 3G data call.

Anyone have complaints with verizon? I’m thinking of maybe switching to them but I’ve heard bad things about their reception and customer service. any truth to this?
