I've heard alot of things, nothing really bothers me, but everytime I hear a EOW I get chills up my spine. (I've heard someone on my scanner but never recorded, Here is one I found online)

Pavelka EOW

Don't knock it before you try it. It may not be your thing, but I've enjoyed scanning since I was about 12...
In some ways this could be 'news' that most directly affects you. I remember one night, this goddamn helicopter passed overhead I swear to god like 20-30 times. No idea why, but it was low, loud and late at night. Found out a few days later from a neighbor that some kid got stabbed to death in a robbery maybe 20 yards from my house (just across a road and a line of trees - robber hid in the trees and tried to mug a kid passing through, kid ran, robber chased him down and killed him). Fortunately nothing impacted me directly but the killer could have come to my door to avoid the police, or perhaps hid in my backyard.

Having a scanner could have given me a heads up on all this. Fortunately I heard about this from the neighbor and will keep my eye out from now on.

Maybe slightly off topic...But I remember a few years ago...I was on the phone with my friend on my cordless phone in my room. We we're talking and all the sudden this jamacian guy is on the phone talking about the Miami Dolphins game. I thought it was someone at my friends house who picked up the phone, but we both had no idea who it was. We just kept listening to some dudes whole conversation, it bugged me out.

I remember it happened a few times, and then hasn't happened since. Although I mostly use my cell phone these days, but why/how does that happen?

I just got a new scanner for my birthday a couple months ago. It is a Radioshack Pro-528 which is only an analog scanner but it also has triple trunking. The digital scanners are nice but are pretty expensive and most of the towns surrounding me are still analog. I got one because I love hearing what the local PD is up too especially since I am going into law enforcement.

Cordless phone technology has improved since then. (more bandwidth, better encryption, more safeguards against this kind of thing) Sounds like your phone hopped to a frequency being used by another cordless phone in the area. Either that or the phone company messed something up on their end behind the copper in your house.

FYI scanning cell phone frequencies these days is seriously illegal.

I turned on the scanner this morning at about 1am after getting back from NYE festivities and heard a pursuit heading towards my neighborhood at speeds in excess for 100mph. Before I knew it, they were pulling into my subdivision and flying RIGHT PAST MY HOUSE! The chase continued for another few minutes and the police ended up with one in custody about 2 blocks from my residence. Police 1, bad guy 0.

Yea a few times. If I get pulled over, I'll just throw it under something or in the center console. It's not worth them harassing you because of it.

One time a state trooper did see it when we stopped me for speeding.and start flipping out, telling me I'm trying to impersonate a cop and shit because I was driving my Impala ss. "I thought you were a unmarked trooper car" he said. Then why the fuck did you pull me over? But he was cool after.

I just picked up this bad boy a couple days ago:

It's a Uniden Bearcat BC250D with the optional digital card. It was pre programmed for pretty much all of Ontario, and there is some CRAZY stuff going on...

I'm still learning how to use it, I have got the scanning down, which is pretty much all you really need... I still need to find out how to dial in an individual channel...

Cops have to deal with some intense stuff, that's for sure.

I picked it up from some guy selling it on Kijiji, I paid $300.00, that's a pretty good price for a digital scanner I've been told. Digital is needed for all OPP while local police are on analog.

I'm a little hesitant to talk about what I've specifically heard because I've been told that it's illegal to talk about it.

No worries, I'm more curious about scanners in general and possibly buying one, I'd love to be able to eaves drop on the coppers.

There's an awesome store called Radio World on Steeles that is a great place to ask questions and play with a few scanners. I went there, played with a couple, saw I needed a digital one for the good stuff and started looking for one.

The number one scanner rule is to always reconsider whether or not to repeat what you hear, especially on an online forum, for some stuff can definitely be sensitive info that can get someone killed. That's why more and more agencies are incorporating encryption, and they're rightfully so in doing so, when you have someone who just loves to blab everything they here on their scanner.

I do a little scanning every now & then but I'm more of a ham than a scanner.

Wow that radioreference site has everything not just police/fire/ems, it has prisons, colleges, nursing homes, public works, ect... I may have to get one of these scanners someday...My old neighbor where I grew up was a ham, he had this huge ass tower constructed on the side of his house and a control room in his basement. He was one of those guys with the call letters on his car and was very serious about it.

Yup, there's a lot more on the airwaves than just boring Police chatter. Bad thing about having a vanity license plate with your call is you can do a search on the FCC's site & find out name & address info. And if you've decked your car out with radio equipment, a thief knows he's probably gonna find the same if he wanted to "visit" your home. That's why I'm discreet with my call.

Here Be The Newest Post...

Finally got around to programming my scanner to pick up on just railroad frequencies so I know just where to be. I took it out and was able to catch a UP freight leaving North Portland's Albina yard. I then drove up to Vancouver, Washington where BNSF has a huge yard that shuffles a ton of traffic and got a few trains out there as well.

For railfans (read: train ) such as myself, the scanner makes finding and chasing trains so much easier than just driving around and hoping for dumb luck.

I paid for the full version (I think it's .99 cents). It's a great app, that nearly makes my $300 scanner obsolete. I say nearly because it doesn't have some of the digital feeds that the scanner can pick up, it also doesn't have air, marine or railroad.

For just listening to the po-po, EMS and Fire, it's a lot more convenient, and user friendly than a scanner.

What if you don't have an app player?

You also can't play Bandit and Snowman

I use mine to intercept top secret government communications. I got an especially disturbing one from New Jersey that said the Twin Towers were felled using thermite applied to the inner walls overnight.
