Printer troubleshooting: I need a new printer (?)

My old PC started bogging down on me, I was asking of it too much, and it was a little on the old side (4yrs old). It was just an average P4 with XP and 2gb of ram. Everything works fine with it, but when I start running too much at a time, I run out of memory very fast, and the dual screen setup only made it worse.

I picked up a Core 2 Duo Quad PC with XP and 4gb ram, and upgraded with a 512mb video card for dual screen (when building it). The PC itself works seamlessly with nary a hiccup. It does what I want, and very fast.

Here's the problem...I had my old computer connected to an HP Laserjet 3015 All-In-One Printer. I used it to scan, print and fax. Probably the best printer I ever had. Worked fine in my old PC. Now I try to connect it to the new PC, that's where the problems start.

I get this message when I tried to install the drivers with the original disc that came with the printer (With the intent to update the doftware afterwards). It gives me an error, telling me it's going to shut down the computer and restart. Also, When loading with the disc, I get an error for "Scrubber" saying that there's a problem with Scrubber and it needs to be shut down. I hear this is common in the HP Driver installs.

Now I got the 3015 to work with the new PC. It prints fine, it faxes fine. BUT the scanner isn't working. I keep getting a message saying there is a conflict.

Thinking that the machine might be bad, I went out and purchased another Printer, the HP Laserjet 1319f MFP. Turns out it's a severe downgrade from what I had before. It's noisier, doesn't scan as well, and doesn't let you multitask more than one thing at a time when it's busy doing something else (the 3015 let me copy while a fax was going in or coming out, would let me scan while printing, etc...). The 1319f is the only other HP that looks like the 3015, so I thought it was a replacement, and it's a good fit for the tight space. They don't have any other machine that looks like it. I like the design of this machine because it's compact and fits in the limited space I have. I also didn't want a flatbed scanner, I only need a sheet fed. As far as I see, 3015 model has been discontinued, otherwise I would have gotten another one in a second (if it truly is the machine being bad).

The link to HP's site with the drivers is: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=228 .

The software I had that is in the old machine is the software for "PCL6". I've tried downloading so many different files, the PCL6 AIO software (HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 AIO PCL6 driver), the firmware update (HP LaserJet 3015 Firmware Update Utility), the software update (hp LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 AIO software update), the fix scan utility (HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 Fix Scan Utility), none of it seems to work at all.

Now the reason I want to get rid of the 1319f is because of its lack of features, noisiness and the fact that the fax machine is not working right. I'm not getting any faxes, and the send/receive transmissions take a LONG time if it even does come through. I'm done with it! I want to return it ASAP, it's junk. I spoke to HP about this and they are blaming the fact that I have VOIP, they told me to slow the fax transmission speed, which didn't help at all. So now I either want to try to get it to work, or get something else that can work well for my needs (and not take too much space).

Does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement or something you have used that you like and can recommend?

Any help would be much appreciated! TIA!

Just out of curiosity Shoofin, try swapping around the USB cables that came with the new printer and the old one that you used with the old printer and computer and see if it doesn't fix the non-scanning issues... Try them both and see of there is a difference.

I don't recall if I tried that or not, but FWIW, the old cable that i've always had for the original printer that was connected to both the old printer and old computer is now connected to the new printer and new computer and it's all working fine, except the fax isn't working now, but it's totally unrelated to the computer, It shares no connection to the computer. I don't send or receive a fax into my computer, it prints out separately.

You probably should have installed the latest software from the get-go. There may be some compatibility issues that have been fixed since the original release.

at any rate, i don't know anything else to do other than completely uninstall all the hp software and start over with the latest downloaded software package.

Make sure the printer is not plugged in, uninstall everything hp related via add/remove then there should be a supplemental uninstall program on the original software cd. You should be able to find a folder on the cd called util(s) and then a folder called CCC. Go in there and run the L4.bat batch file. then reboot, clear your temp folder(start>run>%temp%), and try to load the latest downloaded software package, plug in printer when prompted.

I must have installed, uninstalled and re-installed between the disc and on HP's website the file at least 10 times and can't get it to work. And their web site is very confusing, makes it unclear as to which file you need to install. go to: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...5&swEnvOID=228 and tell me which file you think I should download.

I also have the disc in the PC now, I see the folders you're talking about, but there is no L4.bat.batch file in there. The only icons are, "File to Email", "FixScan", "RegisterDD" and "UpdateACL". The only executable file is the last one, and when you click it, a pop up comes up saying, "Do you want to update the access control list".

that L4 file is important to really scrub all the hp mess out before you try again.

you want the file below. when you run the install, choose the second option to expand the files and keep them because what you want to do is extract the files but not go through the install yet, just exit out. now navigate to the folder where the files were extracted and find the Hewlett-Packard\Scrubber folder and run the scrubber.exe. I believe it has replaced the bat files in the older models i'm familiar with. see if it will prompt you to remove all files/drivers.

then do this update:

1.
Remove the communication cable from the printer.
2.
Run the HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/ 3380 Uninstaller (HP document c00063888 contains Uninstaller instructions).
3.
When the uninstall process is completed, the Restart dialog box appears. Click Restart to restart the computer and complete the uninstall process.
4.
Place the CD that came in the box with the product in the computer's CD-ROM drive. If the CD autoruns and the HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 cd browser screen appears, click Exit . Click Exit again to exit setup.
5.
Select Start , Run from the Windows desktop, and then type X:\SYSTEM32\SCRUBBER.exe in the Open text box where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive. Click OK . The hourglass will flash on the computer screen for a moment, and then return to the standard pointer when the scrubber process is complete.
6.
Remove the HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 CD from the CD-ROM drive.
.....and I get the same problem, that Scrubber has encountered an error and needs to close.

This blows, man..

I just uninstalled the drivers for every printing device in the system, I'm going to try to install the files thru the links you suggested above, and with using a different USB Printer cable (I disconnected the other HP machine that is attached to the PC). I'll try that now and get back to you.. Wish me luck!

try safe mode and if still errors out you could try just re-installing directly in safe mode as described here:

I downloaded the first link you posted above. My computer extracts it, tries to run it, then once clicking through to specify that I am installing the driver to a printer connected to this computer (Printer is not connected yet), it takes a good 30 seconds to load, then I get a screen that says there's an error, and setup is unable to complete the installation, to run setup again, to exit and try again. I tried again 3 times, same results.

I'm in safe mode now trying to install off the first link you gave me...Now it's telling me "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". Guess what, I'm the administrator, AND i'm running it in safe mode using the administrator account.

WTF?!?

I did download the files first, but because i'm in administrator's login, it doesn't show me anything that I downloaded because the original files were downloaded under my main user account on the PC, so I had to re-download it, but that still didn't help.

It's 100% the software. I tried using it on my old computer (that still has the software installed from when I did it a few years ago)and it works fine.

I tried installing the software on another PC I have here and the install is a disaster, loaded with errors, the computer forced the shutdown on me too. So the CD rom software is ass, and now it seems the HP software direct from their site is also ass, because it didn't help any more.

hmm, maybe you could try the revo uninstaller to see if its showing anything HP related still and uninstall it with that, there's a portable version so you don't have to install the program at all, just run it.

I loaded the Revo Uninstaller, there is nothing in there at all having anything to do with HP. I guess there's nothing else to uninstall?

BTW, I went back and returned the fax machine and replaced it with the same 1319f model just to see if I happened to have gotten one with a bad fax.

Let's see how this one goes...

ok. something else that just dawned on me, if that doesnt go then try safe mode again but log on as administrator so it loads a different profile rather than your normal one and try the scrubber. im guessin here you have a separate profile from the admin account. that way if there's something hosed in your profile maybe this will get around it.

When I startup in admin mode, there's two profiles, one is "Eddie" and one is "Admin". I tried running scrubber in both profiles and got the same results-It had to be shut down because of errors.

But when I ran Revo in the normal windows mode, there was nothing from HP showing up in the software at all to being in the computer that could be uninstalled.
