Zune is dead, long live Zune
BY SEAN BUCKLEY
POSTEDOCT 3RD 2011 11:01PM

Like Zune's own Business Development Manager once said, all consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and today the (not so long) lineage of dedicated Zune hardware expires not with a roar, but with a promise to honor its warranties. Tucked away in the inner chambers of the Zune support site lies a page spelling out Microsoft's final words on the device, "Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy," it says, "we will no longer be producing Zune players." The Zune HD is survived by the Zune music service, which will continue to function with straggling standalone media players, as well as the Windows desktop, Windows Phone and Xbox platforms.
zune.

I use the Zune Theme for Windows XP (minus the lame desktop image). That's the only Zune product I ever considered using though.

I still have mine, although I haven't even turned it on in awhile.

Like so many other superior technologies beforehand, the Zune was done in by product and advertising saturation from an inferior, but established opponent.

I still love my ZuneHD.

Oh, and Zune Pass sucks for new subscribers now. New subscriber plan is: $10/mo, no free song credits.

Without the free song credits, it really isn't worth it (to me anyway).

Thankfully, they allow people who already have the old plan to keep it as long as the account maintains payment. Now I just have to make sure to never cancel or miss my Zune Pass payment ever.

Though the 10/mo is the same price as competitors subscription services.

My Zune still works great and it's still has a better UI than iOS at music.

"Superior technology" is not synonymous with "superior product".

The entire Apple iTunes ecosystem is superior to what Microsoft put together.

Zune introduced the world to the Metro UI - the design language for Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8. I think that's a legacy to be proud of.

Key word. The hardware from MS was better.

Sound quality is way better too. I usually listen to music on my iPhone because that's what I have with me. When I break out the Zune HD and listen to the same stuff with the same earbuds, I'm always surprised at how *much* better it sounds.

I don't think there was ever any question that the processor/amp/whatever inside the zune was better sounding.

But 90% of the time I use my iPhone for music its through my car or now streamed to my apple tv...and I let the car or my receiver process the audio.

That..and I can't say I'm a total audiophile, so it sounds good to me right out of the iPhone

The Zune was the beginning of MS UI redesign, it set the path for the next decade+.

I still I have my ZuneHD sitting on my desk, it doesn’t power on though. Maybe I’ll replace the battery in it, no clue why it doesn’t power on
