After being a long time BB user I decided to upgrade from the Bold to the Torch while also adding a line with the iPhone 4. After 3 weeks of using the Torch and iPhone 4 I decided to stay with the iPhone even as a business user. BB has come a ways but in my opinion they are still lacking in OS development. Yes, it trumps the iPhone in keyboard and email customization but overall the transition has gone pretty smooth. To this day I think the Bold was the best BB ever created.

The Torch isn't a bad phone by any means just a lil slow for my taste.

The stock OS is a little bit slow, but the two latest builds have made a pretty big difference in device speed. The browser is much, much faster now and the slide movements are much more responsive. Overall, the device is a lot more responsive running the newer builds of the OS than it was on the stock .141.

Also, as I seem to be keeping a log of the minor bugs and fixes in this thread I'll throw this out there. .246 solved my keyboard issue, but introduced a minor SMS bug. I have several conversations that are duplicated in the SMS app. Thinking about going back to .225 as I never had that problem there and the only thing .246 seems to have fixed is the ability to switch back and forth between predictive and direct text input on the physical keyboard.

Sorry Shoofin, I haven't checked in here in a few days. It should come with .141 on it if its AT&T. I haven't heard of any other versions coming on the phones. In fact, I haven't heard of any other official OS versions coming out, just the leaks.

I'll get the phone later today but will be going right into a holiday, so I won't be able to futz with it until Saturday night. If it has the 141 OS i'll probably update it first before I transfer all the data/apps from my current phone. Makes sense, no?

Hope you like it Shoofin! And yeah, if you have the opportunity, update the OS before doing the transfer. Makes things so much easier. By the way, in case you haven't done it yet, the device switch wizard works well.

Well, did everything tonight. Updated the OS first, then transferred all the data from phone to phone. No problems there. Had a little bit of an issue getting all the stuff from the 1GB Micro SD card to the 4GB card that the phone came with. Also the ring tones on the Torch suck, but I found a way to get the Bold tones onto the Torch. I attempted to copy everything from my old card tot he new card with success-sort of. I also copied the BBM logs that I had stored on the card, I did copy and paste it into the new card but for some reason it isn't there. Only issue I guess I have is the old/new media cards..

The phone froze up on me once, forcing me to do a reset. After that everything seems to be working smooth.

I'm a little OCD with the way I had everything set up on my Bold, there is SO MUCH MORE on this phone, it's driving me crazy with as much as there is on this phone, I need to re-plan how I'm going to place the new apps around..

I'm sending a message thru the phone and using the touchpad...I can't type quite as fast as the keyboard itself but it's decent...I can't say that it exceeded my expectations just yet, but I don't regret it just yet..only annoying thing is I am password protected (I have to be for the nosy people around me), it forces me to use the touch keyboard and when holding the phone upright, it makes typing more difficult.

Are you forced to use a password because of a corporate IT policy, or is just personal preference? If its just preference you can use Patternlock for the storm. It works on the Torch as well. Basically you get a field of dots and you trace a pattern that you define in order to unlock the phone. Only bad thing is people can figure it out based on your fingerprints on the screen. Glad you're enjoying it though!

Nosy people at work and at home (wife). Nothing to hide, but too many prior arguments about stupid things she may have seen on my phone.

Yeah, give patternlock a shot. Its pretty decent. I just installed it last night for grins.

By the way, AT&T officially released .246. It shouldn't be any different than the leak, but I'm still going to load it in the next day or two.

Honestly, I was debating on the Torch and the iPhone 4 for 20 minutes. But, coming from the 9000, I had to stay with a BB. Those 20 minutes were spent with me trying to text and email on the iPhone to try and justify that "I'd get used to it", but I knew I wouldn't.

There's SO MANY THINGS I have to learn about the Torch...it's going to take me a while.

One complaint I have is that I think I tend to hang up on people when talking to them because of my cheek pressing agains the touchscreen.

One thing that I'm thankful for is that the guy at AT&T gave me a FREE Otterbox Commuter Case!

The speakerphone option could use some more volume as well.

Appreciate the info. Looking at getting a torch. Still loving the Bold though.

That's odd. It shouldn't do that. The face detection works flawlessly on mine. Whenever it gets anywhere near my face the screen turns off. If it doesn't, you might want to swap it out.

That is a sweet case. I got one too. The bezel around the screen falls off easily though and after just a month the tab on the bottom has cracked. I'm going to attempt a repair, I'll let you know how it goes.

Update the OS. Speakerphone volume is louder on .246

Okay, correction on the last post. Apparently you can't upgrade the OS if you use DM for Mac. Was not aware of that until last night.

I went to "Options"-->"Device"-->"Software Updates". The phone says my current OS is: 6.0 Bundle 695 (v6.0.0.246, Platform 6.4.0.105).

If you do, beware. Read the reviews specific to the Torch. I've read about some of the screen protectors interfering with the face detection sensor and causing all kinds of mayhem.

I wouldn't not get one based on that, I would just be more careful about which one I got. I want to get one, when I do, I'll post up which one I got.

On another note, the SMS bug present in .246 is getting real old. I have 5 and 6 identical threads for each person I text.

BIS 3.2 rolled out over the weekend. What does this mean for Torch users? In short, you can now sync your google calendar and contacts with your google account without needing the Google Sync app. The big limitation thus far seems to be that you can only sync one calendar, the one associated with your gmail account. If you want more than one calendar, stick with Google Sync.

There seem to be a lot of people on Crackberry reporting that when they did that they got a lot of duplicate calendar entries and contacts. I must have gotten lucky as only about a half a dozen or so calendar entries duplicated and one contact. Ironically, the one contact that duplicated is one of my ex's who's name was changed in my phone to "Psycho Ex" for reasons that should be apparent. It duplicated her contact 10 times. BIS 3.2 must know more than they're letting on....

Yeah, that's pretty slick. Its like a better Pearl Flip with full qwerty and OS6. Beyond that, I don't know a lot about it other than its going to be out on Sprint.

I love Blackberry's keyboards, no one else comes close.

Ideal phone:

iPhone 4's screen, Blackberry keyboard and Palm's WebOS running it.

I was with you right up to WebOS. I've got nothing against it, and when I first saw it I liked it, but its got some flaws. I'd prefer Android. Actually, if I could get a Galaxy S with a BB keyboard, I'd be pretty stoked.

It had flaws, a lot of them have been fixed. No one else does multitasking or alerts as well. Not to mention, its the easiest OS to make apps for.

Android is good too but I think its implementation is quite fragmented.

That's the Blackberry symbol. It just means that you're connected to the Blackberry server and all your data functions are online. You'll get email, BBMs, can surf the net, and anything else that requires data.

I think people were getting confused by the uppercase vs lowercase edge and 3g so they added the BB symbol. Before that if whatever network you were on was in lowercase letters data was available but there was no connection the BB server so no data services worked.

I see. That's what I figured. "Lower-case" letters meant that the connection wasn't as strong as it was with "upper-case" letters.

Newest leaked OS: 6.0.0.337

Click

Fixes a lot of the bugs from .246, and especially .284. I almost installed .284 (I had .246), but too many complaints about it so I hesitated. I just installed .337, hearing some good things about it.

Installed .337 the other day. SMS bug finally seems to be fixed. Browser is annoying though. Its not responding to taps to follow links. I usually have to resort to using the trackpad and clicking that way. Other than that, vast improvement over the previous versions.

So, anyone found a decent case for theirs yet. I got the Otterbox Commuter with the phone, but the ring around the screen broke. Its just a bad design. I got a leather pouch off fleabay for it super cheap, but its the one for the Curve 83xx so the sleeper function doesn't work. Magnet's in the wrong place. It'll work until I find something better.
