naaaaah, my hands aren't even touching the computer when it's happening. I'll try putting a mouse on it and see what happens.

Yeah, happens when you brush against the touchpad. Happens to me when I type, the palm of my hand taps it slightly and away the mouse goes.

I had a little track ball in the middle of my keyboard on my older compaq laptop. It would move on its own sometimes. Never really fix it though, cause it didn't happen all the time.

RootBeer posted about this a couple weeks back, not sure of the resolution.

I should disable my touchpad on my Sony since I keep touching it and puts me in the middle of a sentence and I keep typing in the middle of it.

no, you guys are missing what I'm saying--I don't even have my hands anywhere near computer and the pointer is moving. Then when I go to touch the mouse and get the pointer back on the screen, it doesn't appear for a while. I adjusted sensitivity but w/ no results; ditto changing the style of the pointer.

Mine does that too on my IBM laptop but its 3.5 years old so I don't think much of it - It happens usually when I have it not flat on a table, like if it's just on my lap

I have a dell and mine does the same thing. Whenever I pick it up, or when I have it on my lap the mouse goes crazy. It normally goes into a corner and keeps going. Eventually what I do is put the computer on something flat. That normally keeps it from going crazy. Sometimes that doesn't work and I have to kinda bang the area around the touch pad. I dont know what causes it but it only happens when I pick it up from the front or when I have it on something unbalanced.

BTW, if it is a laptop, and you are using an external mouse, that does not disable the touchpad. If the touchpad is defective, or has something caught between it and the housing on the laptop, it will do this.
