The trick will be convincing all the iPad users to dump their current tablet for a Windows machine and to repurchase all their apps.
While that slate is nice it starts at $1099. It has an i5 and an SSD drive, I don't know why Engadget was so surprised by how well it handled Win 8, doesn't Win7 run fast on it too?

^Not really, tablets are a growing market that isn't even close to maturing. Almost everyone is a new user so MS just has to convince new users to get their tablet instead of the iPad.

^ to add something of high importance, you will be able to install / run any program you'd like from any source, granted at your own risk on Windows tablets.
Example, I had to jailbreak my Apple phone/Pad in order to enjoy the freedom of exploration; with Window we will be able to do that legally. My only concern will be security. I don't even run any banks/cc apps on my Apple stuff. (Yes, we can jailbreak Apple products legally, but it is still illegal to actually install 3rd party apps... =] It's like in Cali, smoking pot is legal, possessing it is not.)
Did they tackle security concerns on Win 8? (I haven't watched the presentation yet)

Needs more Lemon Pledge
20 years ago do you think ANYONE would envision the current use of computers? Wifi? Bluetooth? Technology progresses so fast, that this ONE minor issue is not even of significance...
If the new OS incorporates many of the good features of Apple, there will be a short period of time when a few people will lament that their apple software won't run on the new OS, and then the new OS would have better software anyway so they would switch...
Sometimes you have to step outside the forest to be able to see the trees.
Understand, I am not talking about getting windows as good as OSx or vice versa, but replacing BOTH of them with something better...

read earlier in the thread the app reputation feature that they debuted with IE9 they're adding to windows and that should be damn helpful, also there's going to be a new packaged app format .appx for these metro apps that should be sandboxed, etc much like iOS/Windows Phone apps are today. Other than that not much news on security right now.

I hope there is a way to make the start menu not bring up the metro sexual interface.
I like that the tiles have active content but why are they all ugly?

^ You will have an option for classical Windows 7 gui. The metrosexual gui will come in play with touch devices.

^I don't think so. The old start menu is gone, and Metro is not for touch only devices. There's one version of windows (probably still multiple skus) and not a special version for tablets and another version for PCs, one version to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.

Yep, 64-bit ISO is done downloading. I'll play with it tonight while my wife paints or something.

...So why is it that we're always so anxious to get our hands on the latest OS, just so we can try to make it look and act like the previous one did...

And I'm in! Random new things I've seen so far.
IE10, I'm liking better than IE9
Looks like they've integrated MSE into Windows 8, they're still calling it Windows Defender but this version has the features of MSE, meaning anti-malware, NIS Filter.
Win 8 has system wide spellchecker like Windows phone.
Everything is squared off, glass windows no longer have rounded corners, they're now square, same with buttons like close minimize and maximize all have squared corners. It makes it look sharp, I like this look, reminds me a little of Lion.

Here's another new security feature in Windows 8, it's called secure boot. It requires UEFI and TPM
And as mentioned in the article Windows 8 now loads it's AV early in the boot process before malware to help prevent infection.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windo...1-220707.shtml
Windows 8 secure boot is designed to make the OS more resilient to malicious code created especially to compromise computers even before Windows loads, such as rootkits.
“Secured boot stops malware in its tracks and makes Windows 8 significantly more resistant to low-level attacks. Even when a virus has made it onto your PC, Windows will authenticate boot components to prevent any attempt to start malware before the operating system is up and running,” the Redmond company explained.
“If the component isn’t correctly signed by Microsoft, Windows will begin remediation and start the Windows Recovery Environment, which will automatically try to fix your operating system.”
But there are additional enhancements to the Windows 8 startup process, security-wise. According to the software giant the platform’s resilience to malware has been improved through the trusted boot-up process, set up to repair drivers and reinforce policies automatically.
And there’s even more. Windows 8 allows antimalware programs to load early on during boot so they can offer protection to users even before the operating system will complete the startup process.
“Measured boot Windows can further validate the boot process beyond Secured Boot. The startup processes are now signed, protected, and measured. They’re then stored in the TPM chip to prevent rootkit or malware infection,” Microsoft explained.
“For TPM-based systems, Windows 8 will perform a comprehensive chain of measurements during the boot process, called measured boot, which can be used to validate the boot process to prevent rootkits and other malware.”

A couple other new security features
http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8...uper-fast-boot
“Windows Drive-By Attack” will prompt users when a file or website they are browsing, even if the website isn’t blacklisted or picked up by the browser, that the site is trying to download and install malware, preventing the machine from being infected.
Microsoft will cross reference suspicious files with their database and alert users if the file they are attempting to download through Internet Explorer 10 is infected. To help make sure users are aware that the website or download is infected, Windows 8 will show a full screen green bar across the users screen that a potential threat has been detected.
Infected USB Protection:
Windows 8 will include a safe guard against infected USB sticks from launching attacks against the machine by warning the user that the stick is infected and preventing it from loading or executing any commands. Users will then have the opportunity to remove the device or clean it.
Windows also safe guards against USB attacks on startup, which will prompt a boot screen to either clean the device or remove it and continue with Windows 8. This is just one of the many new security measures that is being built into Windows.

The boatloader is different, some old tricks I tried didn't work. I'll have to mess with the MBR after I remove the hard drive containing Win8.

When I heard about hyper-v in Windows 8, all I could think about was does it allow my to attach physical hard drives and not just VHDs. My prayers, answered! This is the best new feature for me so far.
This is the only free/included software AFAIK that has this capability, VMware Workstation wants $180, F that!

Portable Workspace is now called Windows To Go

zMAfH.jpg
“Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8 that enables enterprise administrators to create USB drives containing complete, managed Windows images that users can use to boot and run Windows on any Windows 7 or Windows 8 capable computer. Windows To Go makes it possible for employees to use a managed device whether they work from home, a client office or in a free seating environment.

To get back the old start menu, open regedit, goto
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
change value of RPEnabled from "1" to "0"
close regedit, you get your old start menu......the catch is, no more metro UI because you just disabled it. To get back the Metro UI, change the value back to "1"

I was worried about this. It could be better but it's already much better than it was in any previous version of Windows. I'd expect this to get better before RTM

OK this thing does boot crazy fast! I'm not counting my bios post and RAID config times cause those are astronomical but once I get to the boot menu and choose Win 8 it was like 3-4 seconds and I was at the log in screen.

Definitely updating to the next gen Intel chips with a nice UEFI board and a SATA 6G SSD when this thing is released. My PC is still plenty fast but bios takes for fucking ever to load.
Initializing USB controllers......
Auto-detecting SATA 1.........
Silicon Image BIOS 7.7.1..........
Intel RAID Config press ctrl + i........
Jmicron scanning for hard drives........
