I always thought that magnets, close enough, could be the death of some electronic devices.
Do phone carrying cases with a magnetic closure have any affect on the battery or the phone?

No.
A strong enough magnet can screw up magnetic media such as a floppy or hard drive. Keep big magnets away from your laptop and ipod classic.
