HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S...?
Hi folks...I need to replace my Sony Ericsson P1i -- it's time as I've had it for 3 years already.
Anyhow, what would your choice be...? I'm on the fence for either...I was sure I would get the Galaxy S but the reviews for the Desire are off the charts too.
And no, I will NOT own an Apple iPhone.

The folks at TechRadar also did a comparo that included the overrated iPhone 4.
The HTC Desire won.
The HTC Desire won.

Here's my
Desire:
Good solid phone. Has a good backing on the XDA forums in terms of custom ROMs and modding. The Desire is pretty much a Nexus One with Sense UI. HTC phones usually have a good hacker base due to all their phones having similar parts. Pretty much the Nexus One, Droid Incredible, HTC Desire and HTC Evo are essentially the same phones just different form factors.
Samsung Epic 4G:
Specs wise, it blows away all Android phones currently out (except maybe screen size wise but I think 4.3" is a little too big). Its pretty much the top of the line in everything. CPU, GPU, Super AMOLED tech, it has a keyboard, front facing camera, flash LED for the back camera. I noticed they changed the internal memory of the phone to 1 GB of ROM and no internal memory card which means that you can at the most get only 32 GB of space compared to the 16 GB + 32 GB of external memory card in the other Samsung phones. Modding wise, Samsung isn't at the same level as the HTC's due to the fact that most of their drivers aren't open source. With that said, the Galaxy phones seems to be having a bigger hacking base due to the fact that the phone is available worldwide and they're all pretty much the same phones with just a few differences in the hardware.
So it'll come down to what you need. Sense UI vs. TouchWiz (People seem to prefer Sense UI better). Keyboard or no keyboard. Front facing cam or no front facing cam. The Desire's hardware is almost getting outdated. The CPU is still capable but the GPU will lag behind in the future depending on the direction that Android goes. I would choose the Epic 4G for futureproofing and it has the keyboard which I sometimes miss. Helps a lot when running code in terminal and emulators.

I too would pick the Desire if it were available for ATT. But don't discount the iPhone. We all know you love debunking what the masses love, Yum (see Lost thread for reference). I too was skeptical before I got mine. When my wife got hers though and I got to use it, I had to get one. Part of the appeal of it is the ease of use and presentation. A lot of posters in our Apple thread came over from Android because of how much easier and faster it was to do stuff on the iPhone. Plus the iPhone is almost always the first to get an app. This may change in the future of course.
Now I'm also a big Android guy and the specs and comparos always point me to the Android on paper. No doubt they are great phones. Maybe a little spartan compared to iPhone but great phones. I will surely strongly consider one next year upon my renewal.
