Hot laptop?

I recently downloaded a program that tells me the temperature of my CPU and Harddrive because I've been noticing that my laptop has been running really hot. The program says that sometimes my CPU get's up to 90 degrees C when I do a lot of stuff with it....my harddrive stays about 50-60 degrees C.

My questions are....

-Is this normal for my CPU to get that hot?
-I still have 6 months left on my Best Buy extended warranty...should I take it in?
-Is there anything else I can do to keep the temperature lower?

Thanks for any help!

There are a lot of laptop fan plates out there. You just set the laptop on them and the fans blow upwards into the laptop. You can get them anywhere.

I have a lenovo and MBP. The lenovo needs the fan plate that jupitersolo was referring to otherwise you can't live with it.

I have speedfan on my desktop and my processor temp is regularly between 50-60 degrees Celsius. I unplugged my fans once to see how hot I could get it and it goes pretty high up there before the computer shuts down.

Try buying some compressed air and blowing out the exhaust vent. Sometimes dust will build up on the heat sink and/or fan which can cause higher temps. Make sure your laptop is off when you do this and do not hold the can upside down while spraying, which is important.

My Core 2 Duo cut off unexpectedly twice in the last day or so. I had it blistering hot with run max performance electricity consumption. I do have a fan plate as well.

I cut about 10 degrees C by going back to normal power and removing the battery. I typically run it with the power brick all the time. The load on the CPUs is about 50%.

I'd like to get the cores down to about 60 degrees C, so I plan tomorrow to remove the cover and blow any dust out around the fan and heat sink.

I'd also like to squirt some heat sink grease/ thermal compund in there, but where do you actually apply it. Can you apply it directly to the outside of the CPU?

Thanks

i have speedfan also

mines normally around mid 50s with normal use

if i play games I've seen it hit 100 C

Well my roommate played a lot of sc2 on my comp

I think he burned out something cause I'd say 3/4 of a year of playing on my comp, I cant run windows on full graphics or else it freezes and my graphics card stops responding. Only happens when I watched vids.

Open up your laptop if you can and clean it out there's probably a lot of dust? Or have best buy do it for you

I had a similar issue with my Latitude notebook a few months back, laptop would run fine for a few minutes and then start slowing down drastically. The fan wasn't making any noise either hence I knew it had to do something with the performance. There are tutorials available online showing how to open almost any kind of laptop.

I used one of them to disassemble the whole laptop, the whole thing needed to be disassembled to get to the fan. You can pick up a replacement fan from ebay, they usually go for $5~$15 and come with some thermal grease to be applied between the heat sink and CPU. My issue got solved after replacing the fan.

P.S There was a lot of dirt stuck between the cooling fins of the heat sink. I had to thoroughly clean it before reinstalling it. If the fan is good then I'd just clean it and see if that solves your issue.

Use search and get a Don't use a search get a And still get moved.

Update: A $7 can of compressed area and I reduced the core temp from about 77 degrees C to 36 degrees C.

The bottom cover was secured by 8 screws and it was dust bunny heaven. Also my cool plate was dust bunny heaven.

^ I have a studio as well with Core 2 Duo at 2.26 Ghz.

At first glance, I read your line at 120 degrees C.... boiling water. I change my scale and it is running at 122F in each core.

I guess that's o.k. since I leave it running night and day.

I have a Dell 1737 and it suck air in from the back and the fan shoots it down through the bottom, and my Antec place has two fans pulling the air down through the unit.
