^Actually Seagate released a firmware to "fix" the problem but it only made it worse and after installing the firmware you get a system disk error and trying to access any backup files or system images to restore from are also unsuccessful. So the latest I"ve heard is that they pulled the firmware

They've pulled the update pending validation.

Barracuda owners who flashed their disks with the firmware found that after they rebooted, they'd receive a system disk failure error message. Backups, if they were stored on the same drive that was flashed, also became unavailable.

If you have a Barracuda hard drive, best follow this forum thread to keep updated on news from Seagate. Hopefully, the next "fix" they release isn't such a mess.
that sux but

We use to have tons of those old Maxtors fail. We replaced most of the workstations with Western Digitals. I think two has failed in 2 years.

we are starting to transition into the new SSD drives now for workstations/laptops, since users' images are relatively small (we don't give them shit, besides OS + Office + some custom apps) so no need to get 60+gb HDDs.

i find they tend to fail much less...laptop users seem to be more happy b/c they notice it's quicker and battery life is longer i might be setting myself out of a job, hehe.

I would, I've never had problems with them. Not knocking Seagate (I have one in my other PC) but I've built several computers with WD's and never had an issue.

Seagate now has the 7200.12 revisions shipping. Matter of fact, I just got 35 or so 80GB Seagate 7200.12 cause Newegg has them for $34.99 each...

Also, received 20 500GB Seagates and they were the 7200.12 as well.

You should be fine since you have redundancy. I can't imagine a day where more than one fails at the same time... You do have it set for RAID5, right?

yea i never had an issue with WD, the only reason why i stopped using them was because the past hard drives i bought were loud as fvck, and not like a loud access grinding/ticking noise, it was a constant really high pitch whine.

annoying as hell.

mine are whisper quiet. get the ones with the 5-year warranty. I bought this one recently and it's been great.

Yes, the whole point of a drobo is redundancy...you cant have it any other way.

SpinRite has paid for itself many times over for me. It has pulled marginal drives back from the thin edge of failure at least a dozen times, and made the data visible for at least long enough to get it off the drive and onto another one. If you do any kind of computer maintenance or repair it's definitely worth the $69 cost.

Will it work for my ST3500320AS that can't be detected by the bios?

Would rather buy a legit product than to do the diy fix for my hd

Unfortunately SpinRite only works if the drive is visible to the BIOS.
