Hard drive failure?

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 and about 3 hours ago, when I rebooted it, an error came up telling me something is wrong with the hard drive and to contact Dell. I have to press F1 to continue loading Windows. Has anyone experience this problem before? Any solutions?

Thanks

Does the machine boot? The SMART technology of the drive has probably detected too many disk errors. Call Dell and get a new drive.

Yes, when I get the error I have to press F1 to continue loading windows.
I bought it about 3 years ago so my warranty period is over. I'm backing up stuff right now and going to put a new copy of XP. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll have to go and buy a new HD.

The msg says: Dell's Disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard-disk drive by calling your support desk or dell computer corporation."

I just reinstalled xp and I'm still getting it.

Did you do a complete format? Not a quick format ... full format? I think a lot of times problems occur with data loss when you don't have "clean" power. Best insurance I have with my computer is a UPS ... Tripplite, APS, whatever ... get one to make sure brownouts or surges don't corrupt your data.

Sounds like your MDF (mean disk failure) for your drive is less than average.

Thanks for the replies. I searched the internet for the error message that I got and found out my HD was about to fail. I went and got a new HD and now the error message is gone. I got a Western Digital 120 GB 7200RPM with 8MB cache for $90 CDN (after the mail and rebate).
