Here's a build that my co-worker just put together for one of our clients. We call it our Carbon Series.

The pictures don't do it justice. It's super clean.

That's not a bad list Stogie. Your old case and 550 PSU should be sufficient. Depending on how old it is you may want to look into replacing it down the road. I've lost a lot of components to aged PSUs over the years. That things got more power than my gaming machine, enjoy it!

Thanks Mike, I am definitely going to check that out. I have Fry's Electronics in town so I plan to put my hands on one to check it out sometime after I get the machine up and running.

I smell bad power supply. I'd check that, you can pick one up for $30ish to test.

I've got one of these, very handy for my job.

You know what, you may be right, I think my computer did the same when the PSU went out.

I bought one of those testers too.

Also FYI it's extremely rare for a CPU to die, in fact I've never seen it happen IRL.

Stunna, the drives spin, all the fans spin, and the green LED on the MOBO lights up...

I tried swapping a new Vid card in and no joy, so I suppose I could try a new PS, too, but I think that after 6 years, the processor and the thermal compound on it may have just called it quits...

I am not admitting defeat, but the computer ran, no joke, 24/7 for 6 years. I only shut it down when I went out of town.

they spin normally.

I will "borrow" a PS from Best Buy tomorrow when I return the Vid card and see.

Don't get me wrong, I would be MUCH happier spending $80 on a new PS than $800 on all new gear right now.

I am a little hopefull that it may just be the PS.

I am also a little less stressed/pressured to buy new stuff, as my Netbook seems to run the remote app I need to use.

Bad motherboard or overheating.

Try new thermal paste, its the cheapest fix/test you can do.

Other than that, test motherboard by pulling ram and booting with no ram in.

You could try a new power supply, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Good luck

Funny you should mention that. I just replaced a bad CPU in my mom's machine. It wouldn't power up at all, no response from the button. Tried disconnecting all the drives, swapped out the ram with known good ram, tried an external video card (vs the onboard) all to no avail. Was getting ready to swap in a new mobo when I figured I'd try a replacement CPU. Had one laying around from a system I scrapped out with a bad mobo. It posted, but the voltage regulator was going bad so under load voltage dipped and it blue screened. It ran great with the other CPU.

I've built probably over 200 machines since the early 90's. Only one ever had a bad CPU. Original Athlon 64 and I'm quite sure it was my fault...

Speaking of surge protectors, which ones would you get?

Not looking for anything fancy, just want something to plug in and let it do its job. I completely forget how much a typical good one costs.

Can't beat them, and you get the added benefit of not losing your work when the power flickers which is pretty frequent here in the summer. I've got a 550 on my network equipment, a 1500 on my PC (which will run it for about 45 minutes while gaming) and had a 350 on my entertainment center until the battery crapped out. Just haven't gotten around to buying a new one yet but I will.

I got the 900 for my server and recently upgraded my 900 on my desktop to the 1300. It's got the new feature that cuts power to my accessories like my speakers, monitor and hard drive dock when I put my pc to sleep. Pretty suite, will save a few bucks in the long run and have less annoying lights in my room when I try to sleep, plus I like it's led display

You guys don't have battery backups already on your machines? SMH
You guys need to get on that, I probably have a very brief outtage for lightning or whatever about once a week so I got the router, modem and computers all on backup so if we get a brief power outtage I don't lose interwebs.

I have 3 older versions of those. Definitely worth the investment.

I've often found battery is almost as much as new unit so I just buy a new one when they're on sale or closeout
