So, any thoughts on a i5 Sandy Bridge component setup? Looking for very stable and not very cutting edge (I don't overclock), but stuff with loads of good reviews.

My method of building is to get the sale emails or papers and see what's highly rated and go from there. Thus, no specific recs I can make.
That said, since I've always wanted to do a Hackintosh dual-boot, I will probably be limiting my purchases to known working combos.

the A8 is a quad core processor at 2.9Gz with 400 ati GPU cores on the chip. meaning that the processor and graphics is now on the same chip. so you get a quad core chip with an equivalent 6000 series ATI graphics. for the A8 it's equivalent to a 6500 or higher GPU. so all you need is the new APU chip, motherboard, and ram....no video card. the A8 chip is roughly $140, and the A6 is cheaper but also slightly slower for $120.
this APU can also crossfire with an equivalent 6000 series graphics card for great graphics.
They also released a new mother board for the new socket called FM1. motherboards are around $100
for roughly $250 to $300(depending on the APU and motherboard you choose) and ram ,you will have a blazing fast yet inexpensive build. That i bet would be cheaper then the i5 build and faster for less money.
AMD i feel is going to possibly surpass intel shortly in terms of performance and bang for your buck, they have nearly caught up with intel....
this is my recommendation if you won't be gaming much or at all and also low power consumption. i think the sandy bridge arch. and the i3/5/7 series are pretty damn good, i run an i7 OC'd in my PC and it's faaassst.
anyways here's a video from newegg with AMD on the new chip, very good explanation

Hop on Newegg and Tomshardware, look up hardware that gets good recommendations and compare it to your budget.

Don't you know thats all the rage over on the overclock boards these days!
Seriously, I spend as much time at overclock.net these days as I used to spend at Azine...

it can be used on a mobo that supports ddr3 memory. if the mobo has lower speed capacity the ddr3 memory will operate at that lower speed. so yes it can be used with the mobo with lower speed capacity.

I've been building computers for myself for 20 years and booting into Windows in 15 seconds is possible with a conventional hard drive. Hell, I could do that on Windows XP 10 years ago.

My latest build: One of the drive's I recycled from the old pc is throwing read/write errors, looks like it's pooched so I will probably replace this week with another 2 2TB drives. Its under warranty so I'm waiting to see what WD will do for me. What's awesome is that it's dead silent.
gots me one of these
and threw one of these in it
then added G.SKILL NQ Series DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 4GB
and 2 Western Digital Caviar Green (WD20EARS)
and recycled 2 Western Digital Caviar Black (WD1002FAEX) 1000GB from my old box
and recycled 1 Western Digital Caviar Black (WD5001AALS) 500GB for a boot drive.
All said and done she scores a 3.8 on the windows experience index which is not high but sufficient enough for what is essentially a NAS box. The purpose of this build was to be silent and of a small foot print since I have moved into a condo and space is limited. I succeeded with silent, let me tell you with the 140mm case fan it keeps it all cool and it can not be heard.

Well, I was going to pick up some memory for my next build but the special expired.
Oh well, I discovered yesterday just how badly I need dedicated video. It's still the hardest component to pick.
Any better card for about the same price?

Also considering this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&Tpk=gts%20450
It's $110 locally plus $40 rebate, so it'd be $70.

Oliver!!!
Thinking about doing an ITX or possibly MicroATX build. Has to be light and portable. I took my machine to a buddy's house last week and nearly threw out my back getting it all back in the car. The lighter, the better. The hurdle seems to be power supplies. All the ITX cases I've found have 200-300 watt PSUs and that just won't be sufficient to run a decent video card. I've found on Lian Li case that will take an ITX board and an ATX PSU but its around $100. Hoping to go cheaper than that.

OK, this is my current mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813141011
It's EOL as far as upgrades go. It's got onboard GeForce 8200, right now I just really want something that will play 720p vids (can't without stuttering) on my monitor and maybe play FSX. That's about all I need right now, and I don't think spending coin on a nice video card today for a future build is a wise move.

I may have just foolishly spent $140 on new drives. one of my 1tb's crashed, so I grabbed 2 2tb's to replace it (wth they were on sale for 69 ea) then I thought to myself I bet this 1tb still has warranty. Sure enough western digital is replacing it. Now I'm out of sata ports on my mobo. Looks like I'll have to grab a pcie port adder and fire that drive back in. Also found a 60gb SSD for $59, had to snap it up. All said and done the pc I mentioned about is about to have 10TB's!

They're basically the same board, I don't think it really matters if you don't need a PATA connection.
I'd go with the first one, since it supports your memory without having to OC.
