cdma in europe??????

Got this from www.telephonylnline.com Its a real good mag if your interested in the industry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The European continent once appeared to be land on which CDMA networks would never be built. But the protocol is now becoming the popular choice in Europe for deployment in the 450 Mhz band, and the significance is not lost on CDMA intellectual property maven Qualcomm.

“Many years ago, you would have never seen it happen, but the last few years, there has been much less resistance to CDMA in Europe,” said Bill Davidson, vice president of investor relations at Qualcomm.

Part of the reason is that CDMA is much more practical for deployment in the 450 Mhz frequency band than other technology options. “You can get three carriers [channels] into the allocated spectrum,” Davidson said.

Progressive policymaking is another reason why CDMA is succeeding. The move to spectrum trading in Europe has lowered the barriers to new competitive carriers entering the market and building networks.

Davidson, echoing a view other CDMA450 vendors have expressed, also said that 450 Mhz operators who were pitched on CDMA years ago appreciated the idea they would eventually have an easy evolution to 3G WCDMA technology. “We pitched that idea to anyone we could get in front of, and years later, the market is now wide open for a migration to WCDMA,” he said.

The success of CDMA450 also is helping Qualcomm’s own case in for selling chipsets into the European market, where it has been trying to make headway for at least a year. “There’s more recognition of what Qualcomm is trying to do there,” he said.

I said it a year ago, that CDMA would reign across the world. But it was always in the migration path for GSM/TDMA carriers to converge on some form of CDMA in the future anyway. While it probably still won't be compatible with CDMA as we know it in America, it is still nonetheless, the superior technology.

Discussion from a year ago.

No I think we will have two forms of CDMA all over the world that will dominate and a few other oddballs like Japan. And if we have dual-mode phones, they will work nearly everywhere. GSM is going away, it's just a matter of time. In the meantime, there will be a few combo GSM/CDMA phones (a few even today) but they're not really popular.
