Brand new but affordable laptop with a good screen?

What are some options for new laptops that are affordable and not too bulky?

I'm especially looking for something for work that will be easy on my eyes.

Just needs to be used for database, spreadsheets, word, and Internet access (AIM, Internet Explorer).

Do I even need a full laptop for that stuff? Suggestions?

Dells are bricks... I'd rather pay a few more bucks and get a Sony Viao.

Yeah those VAIOs are sweet. Good thing I won't need this for a couple months. $999's about as cheap as it can get I guess. Ouch.

I had a Dell laptop, I think the Inspiron 5100.

It was a brick. The machine was ok. But it was so heavy....

...I had to return it and get a full refund. I only kept it for 2 days, that's how heavy it was.

dell, sony has questionable reliability. i know people who have never had a problem and the opposite.
apple is always an alternative if you go with the 12''

The inspiron 600m is badass...real small with the centrino chipset

I have an 8200...fuking badass, with GOBS AND GOBS of power...but if I had to go back and buy another laptop, I'd buy a powermac g4 (either the 12" or 15", NOT the 14" or 17"). They're real light, great screen, and have just excellent tools for developers.

I have the Inspiron 8000 and yea its pretty thick but I got a deal from Enron when I was working there. If i had to get one now, I would look at the Dell 600m and 500m, the ones with the centrino processor. They are pretty light, about 5 pounds and 1.2 inches thick plus they have a 14 inch screen. The vaios are probably the best if you want to get the thinnest, but I'm not really sure about the reliability.

J:

I just bought a mack daddy custom built, Inspiron 8500.

I compared it with the toshiba and the sony.

Get it from Dell. I was able to talk them down, and get exactly what I wanted. I put them against sony and toshiba and made them go lower.

PM me or IM me if you want the chicks # that I got mine off of. She'll hook it up.
