I have an NEC 1530V. It's a 15" LCD, and I paid $500 about 10 months ago. I think the prices have dropped another hundred or two since then.
It is fantastic. I compared this one side by side with all the other panels they had at Circuit City, and it blew them away. The difference was night and day.
And, before the haters jump in, I am doing all the stuff that people say LCDs aren't good for, like video editing and games, and it works great. I have NASCAR Racing 2002 and the display is crystal clear - no blurring or anything, and that's at a frame rate of around 40 fps (which is pretty good, considering I'm running XP with the original video driver that came with the OS).

I have a princeton graphics LCD. It uses a digital connection to elimante the analog conversion desinged for CRT monitors. This greatly improves framrate and res qulaity. You have to get an adapter for your graphics card, you need a DFI port. It also has an analog connection.

I have an LCD monitor... on my laptop! It's a 15.1" 1600 x 1200 display and it's crystal clear. I wince when I look at an analog monitor these days... so fuzzy.
Definitely get a video card with a digital DVI output for your LCD. It completely eliminates the gosting (signal ringing) and fuzzy pixels (misalignment) you typically get with an LCD.
As for color rendition and ghosting, most of today's TFT LCDs don't have any problems at all. In fact, the color rendition of an LCD monitor is a heck of a lot more consistent than most CRTs. And I needn't mention bad focus and flickering, neither of which can be found on LCDs.
My next monitor is definitely an all-digital LCD.

I have the Sony MultiScan SDM-M81 18.1-inch Multimedia LCD monitor. I love it! More viewable screen than my 19" CRT that just bit the dust. $1099 at CompUSA but you can get it cheaper online.
If your primary use is going to be surfing the web and other 2D applications, LCD is the way to go. REALLY sharp graphics and easy on the eyes. If you are primarily gaming or watching DVD/DivX, etc. then CRTs are still the best choice, IMO. If you really want LCD for this, make sure it includes MVA technology for fast updates and has a high contrast ratio (500:1 or higher).
Wish the Apple Cinema display were PC compatible out of the box, that thing is SWEET.
