Stunna, I know you will probably do this just for the knowledge, but it might be worthwhile to find out how many other ACN providers there are in your city and call a few and find out how many jobs they actually get. I guess I just don't hear about all that many Mac networks... Maybe design firms, music/arts places but how complicated are those networks that they would need to pay someone to come in and set it up?

From a business perspective, you may want to do a little research before you leap into any significant costs.

I don't think there are a lot of mac businesses but according to the guy from the Apple Store there's only a few ACN members in the Tampa area. So I think the ratio is pretty good. Also I've been thinking of getting a Mini just to have for a little bit so it's not that big of an expense. Plus I wouldn't be paying for my training, etc. I'd probably have to pay for the Mini though....

I know a couple of our clients want to go mac already. The fees aren't that much that I worry about being able to recover costs or not.

Businesses don't have to go all mac they could just get a few for a single department, say their design department and have me come set them up.

Macs never have problems. The reason there are so few ACN members is they all got pissed off when Apple pissed on their cheerios by opening their own stores. It would be good for you to learn though IMO. I think macs are more likely to show up in small businesses because many people who have start-ups probably used a mac in college.

Will do, I'll update with questions and what not.

I'm trying to decide if I should order online or go to the Apple store and see if the guy will give me the discount, he said he'd give me a discount of at least 10% on the Server OS but I think I'd rather have the Mini.

What sucks is that I'd need to spend $200 on a KVM that has Dual Link DVI and a Dual Link to Mini Display Port adpater

To those interested there was an article in Lifehacker about how to run Windows, Linux and OS X side by side in a VM using Virtual Box.

http://lifehacker.com/5623313/how-to...ith-virtualbox

Virtual Box is the only Vm software to support OS X. I was thinking bout going that route but I'd rather not

VMWare for Mac supports SL server, but not SL. So you can use that if you are installing the server.

You could run the mini headless and skip the kvm.

I'd be using Windows and I really don't want to put it in a VM on my desktop.

That is also a posssibility, i'd have to set it up initially with KVM then go headless afterwards. Doesn't screen sharing in OS X use VNC technology? Could I use say TightVNC or UltraVNC and connect to it via Windows?

But I really don't want a downgraded display, graphics, and laggy response that usually comes with a headless setup. Sorry, I'm just really picky and it's worth it to me to get a KVM so I can run it at a native 2560X14440 resolution.

IT'S HERE!!!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25469567@N06/4946647722/" title="Untitled by klxz79, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/4946647722_0ea207411a_z.jpg" width="478" height="640" alt="" /></a>

As you can see it fits perfectly on top of my PC. I ordered a display port KVM, I could only find one company that makes them so I hope it's good.

I picked one up on the way home from work and talked to my new guy at the Apple Store, I got a 3% discount. Would've been cheaper to order online but oh well, I'm in with him now!

Haven't done much, just doing initial setup, updates (it shipped with 10.6.3) and what not. I was trying to decide if I wanted to join it to my Windows Domain or create a new domain I think I'm gonna create a new one. But I want to be good at both, I think I might be doing more work with mixed environment domains than OS X only networks.

More to come.....

yup, and you can tell that just by looking at it. The server doesn't have an optical drive...

Stunna, have you done anything with the network account server settings? I would like to have all my macs work off the server for login/passwords. Wonder how it works, if it's easy to set up.

No not really, I've only made a couple user accounts. Wouldn't seem to hard to setup. Are you talking about making a domain and then the users login to their Macs with their domain account instead of a local account on the Mac?

Yes, exactly... So regardless if I'm on the iMac or Macbook air (or my wife), it's one account stored on the server.

However, if I am away from home, I would obviously like to be able to not have to be tethered to the network in order to log in. Any thoughts on that?

I know only from Windows experience that that is the default setting for a domain account. It allows you to login into pretty much any PC on the domain (unless specified otherwise) and you can login even when the PC isn't on the same LAN as the Domain Controller. I would assume that would be default for OS X too. I'll have to join my MBP to the OS X server to confirm later though.

I figured I'll continue over here instead of the other thread.

OK joined my mini server and MBP to my AD domain and installed server admin tools on my mbp. I delgated control of my domain to my MBP and now I can control my AD via OS X!

This is me controlling AD from my MBP using workgroup manager

P31uz.png

I used an opensource utility called likewise to join my miniserver to the domain and then for my MBP I just used the builtin directory services to join.

Ok now the issue I'm having is transferring file, programs and settings from my local user account on my MBP to the new network user account on my MBP.

I configured the likewise utility to do it for me and give my network account local admin rights too but I have to do it manually now. I can do a TM backup and then restore users settings, files and programs from my local account to my network account using migration assistant but I wanted to check and see if there was another easier way to do it?

Ideas?

p.s. I've already given the network account local admin rights.
