Any way to remotely wipe a hdd?
Friend is going out to Italy in a month or so, and if all goes well, he's staying out there.
He's obviously not bringing his computer with him, but he wants to remotly wipe 3 drives incase he does stay.
Any software out there for that?

'remotely' meaning, he is leaving his computer on? there are scripts he can execute, and there are programs, depending how computer savvy the person is... to me, this is nonsense.
P.S. Define wipe, a military wipe? of 3 hard drives? lol.. good luck =]

the overexplainer
there's no easy way to do this without someone physically there to do it.
How about put all the data on something like dropbox or use CrashPlan to back it up (unlimited data) and then wiping the drives?

then create another boot image on another drive and boot into that one.
change the boot.ini to select the new os drive then
set up a run once job that will wipe the other 3 hd's
there are programs that will do it
sdelete from www.sysinternals.com can do it, and do a DOD wipe of the drive.

I'd employ linux on a boot cd/usb/hd to take care of my wiping. Boot into it, remote it, wipe the other hard drives, sleep tight
P.S. remotely connect to Windows, change boot up options, this will bring you to Linux.. or just install Linux in Windows with Wubi (separate partition obviously)
P.S.#2 If the above seems hard, you've reached the end line Grab a big hammer, go wild. He wants wiped/destroyed, what's the difference
Why is he so paranoid? He def. does not work for the gov't. What is he hiding? And unless the wipe is done with a few passes, it can be recovered. Throw a huge magnet on it

Better question, why is he so paranoid that he wants them wiped clean while gone?

I know
I did it on purpose.
there are plenty of boot cd's with linux that would do it as well. but that is even more complex to a computer noob who is that worried about his data that i could recover no matter what he did to the drives.

So he can't take them with him? Only reason I see is that he doesn't want to risk customs or some other law enforcement to see what is on his hard drive. Sounds shady as shit.
