Android Screen Capture
Hope you guys can help me with this.
Do you have to be rooted to be able to screen capture something on your android? Or are there any apps that can do this without rooting? If so which is the best?
My phone is unrooted with android 2.3 at the moment.
Thanks

I'm actually looking for a response from people like CGFebTSX04, civicdrivr, speedemon90 or anyone posting in the Android: News thread, since I'm sure they will have a better answer from their experience.

Depending on which phone and ROM you have, you will need root to take a screenshot easily. Some phones and ROMS have it already built in (Samsung Galaxy S II and S I Gingerbread, Cyanogenmod, MIUI). You can still take screenshots without root on phones using ADB tools but its a longer process. There's also an app in the market (not free unless you know how to find it ) that'll allow you to take screenshot without root. Downside is, the app must be reloaded via USB cable after every reboot.
No Root Screenshot It: https://market.android.com/details?i...llnoroot&hl=en
Instructions on how to take screenshots using Android SDK without root:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...ndroid-device/
^With the instructions above, you will need to install ADB via the Android SDK and set it up (its really not that complicated and you'll most likely need it if you want to root in the future). Once you have that installed, you have to connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable or ADB Wireless and run the ddms.bat file.
Or you could skip all of the above and root your phone and install a screenshot app. Depending on which phone you have, the rooting process can be easy (one click) or a llittle more difficult.

If you didn't have something smart to contribute, why bother responding? Instead of your smartass comment you could have used that time to say YES OR NO to the question.

Unfortunately, you wanted to start a worthless thread and then jump all over someone when they try and help you out. Nice job, Dick.

That was a smart contribution...you're welcome for the link. If you would have Googled for the info that you so desire and quit being fucking lazy, the answers would have been right in front of your face.

I will admit to being lazy that I didn't want to read through 10 difference websites, much better to just get a straight answer from the people mentioned above who will go to the point.

The set up of the SDK is the hardest part (which really isn't that dfficult). Everything else is just connecting the computer and running one program. I'm rooted and I've never used any of the apps in the market to take screenshots for the posts I make on here. Its far more convenient for me to use the ddms.bat method since I have to transfer the pics onto my computer any way after taking them to upload to imageshack and/or resize them. Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich have screenshot support built in so there won't be any rooting involved for the noobs but I still prefer to use ddms.bat on my tablet.

Easy for you but not an average person, compare it to the iPhone and it's drastically more difficult.

Or if you root just download an app that does the same thing with whatever combination buttons, shake the phone or whatever you want to do to signify you want a shot taken. This was discussed before in the other thread as to why Google didn't allow it natively, namely, for security purposes in preventing apps being written into taking screenshots of whatever you're doing. Apparently, Google made some changes in Honeycomb onwards to remedy this problem so it'll be simpler. For the Galaxy Nexus, I believe its Volume Down + Power. In Honeycomb, you just hold down the Recent apps button.

I know but it's ridiculous that android users have to take such drastic steps to accomplish something that's so simple on other devices, that's all I'm saying.

Meh. Not a deal breaker for the majority of people. I know I don't choose a phone based on how easily I can take a screenshot. I don't even use the function except to do write ups on here. Otherwise, I could care less for the feature.

No but people would use it more often if it was easier to use. Once the snipping tool was added to windows I started making screenshots a hell of a lot more often than when I had to use print screen then paste into a program and then crop and save.
Look at the popularity of the autocorrect meme websites which are almost exclusively iPhones because taking a screenshot is so simple on iOS, I see my regular non tech friends often post screenshots of their iPhones on Facebook. It should be just as simple on all android devices is all I'm saying....

Again, its really not that big of a deal that you're making it to be. Most of those memes on that site are photoshopped any way which defeats the purpose of it in the first place. I'll even go far to say that because there are different keyboards available in the market that are superior to the default Android keyboard, the autocorrects aren't as bad as the ones from the iPhones.
If people are too lazy to root, there's the No Root Screenshot method which works quite well. I've showed it to my friends who are computer illiterate and are afraid to root and they use it all the time without any issues. Most people don't even reboot their phones that often so if you run it once you're good until the next time you reboot. I've met plenty of people who didn't even know they could shut down their iPhones.

Now to protect android
The iPhone took forever for other stuff too, just saying.
OTA updates >>>>>>> taking screen shots
(yes I know the iPhone can do it now, and soon phones with ICS will be able to take screen shots)
There's also windows 7 when they first came to the game late. No copy/paste.
Every OS has its limits. I hope you bash apple and windows too because they aren't perfect either. I guess I dont visit those threads so I wouldnt know if you do. And I know your an IT guy, I know you know there is no perfect OS out there, everyone is flawed, some more than others, but I would say with all the latest updates they're closer than ever.

I take back some comments then.
I didnt know that about apple's signal thing.
I switched my signal thing to display the actual signal strength. I like it more.
