Sense 4.0 looks nice and is smooth (except the occasional redraw) but it's a freaking resource hog. They'll really have to slim it down to run on an older device. I can't wait for CM9 to come out on the Evo LTE but I'll miss the awesome stock camera =/

Once I get the EVO 4G LTE my mom will get my EVO 4G. She'd like an Android phone with a bigger screen than her LG Optimus S's 3.2" screen. She's 64 years old and doesnt need the speed and resourses we do so her hand me downs are great...lol. She does keep up with us though...
. I have a cool mama what can I say. Some older people embrace technology while others depend on their kids to help them.

What you're trying to do is complicated because HDMI is a digital signal and you're trying to convert it to an analog signal. If it works out, the quality probably won't look all that great so not sure if its worth all the work in the end but let us know how it works out if you get it figured out. Also, the charger in your car must be powerful enough to make the phone think that its being charged by an A/C source for the MHL to work. You could do this by tricking the phone via a setting in the kernel to activate rapid charging when connected to any power source and you can verify via the About --> Phone Status screen where it says charging source is A/C and not USB. Activating Rapid Charging will disable USB Storage as a side effect.

^Looks awesome. Did they provide any info on how the phone hooks up to the unit? I like how the touchscreen works on it. Was planning to just somehow put my Transformer in my car with a seat bracket once it becomes outdated or something with offline navigation in the future but that looks to be easier if its just plug and play with an MHL/HDMI adapter.

i use my phone for everything....navigation/music/call/video/etc/etc/etc/.....
i wanted to install an ipad/samsung galaxy tab in my dash....but didnt wanna pay 500 for the device and 35 every month for data...thats when i thought why dont i mirror my phone to a screen in the dash....well i ordered the HDMI to Composite Audio/Video downconverter....lets hope it works....i already have a MHL adapter....

Well that one is specifically for Lexus but the design of the device is very similar to this platform here. This unit is universal so you are required to figure out how to hook it up to your navigation as far as video and touchscreen connectors. However most newer car navigation just uses 4 wire touch screens so you just need to create a splice in the cable to this unit.
I am happy that I have a Lexus and can buy the pre-built unit that is directly plug and play. I will be researching this other unit though to put in my TSX in the coming months as it would be nice to have the same setup in both cars.

There's also a bracket that attaches to a bolt on the passenger seat which is also more universal than the method above.
You don't really need to pay extra $35 for data if you know how to bluetooth/WiFi tether off your phone. Also, most Android tablets are getting cheaper right now so there's no need to shell out $500 for this. If the Nexus 7" Tablet is really coming out at $200-$250 then I know what I'm looking at.

not digging the brackets....its sticking out too much....
also I dont have Navigation so it will be a 7" screen....
I have the audio working with the audio cable
even though i want it work using the HDMI cable....but i hope the downconverter works....will connect that and post up my setup....it wont be a touchscreen and hence the remote will be the phone itself....
finally, can we do dual displays using the Android ? so you have 1 display on your phone and you can display something else on a different screen ??? something like having 2 monitors connected to your desktop/laptop ?

No you can't have dual display at least with MHL. From what I have read with MHL v1.0 you don't even get anything on your screen at all everything is out putted to the external screen. With MHL v2.0 that is in some phone and pretty much in all new phones coming out it allows for mirroring so you at least see the same on both screens.

Hmmm. Not sure about the two different displays being shown currently with Android. However, mirroring is 100% on the phone and on the external display and yes the screen stays on (unfortunately or fortunately if you want that). Here's a video of what it looks like:
Now I'm not sure what version MHL the Nexus is using but I've had no issue mirroring the screen on both the phone and the monitor. The funny thing is, I would like to have the screen turn off on the Nexus while using this mode. lol.

Maybe it is just video players that don't mirror but I also believe the Nexus was one of the first with v2.0 but I could be wrong.

Damn that is going to suck cause I don't want to burn in my screen on long trips. I mean 7+ hours with my phone screen on straight can't be good for it.

i was playing pandora, had my GPS on, maps was on and my bluetooth on for ECU parameter logging....
when thow the car charger was plugged in, i was loosing battery
the GPS and big ass screen on the Galaxy note sucks it dry LOL

Haha yeah. Also these phones are powerful but I am not sure how well they will handle GPS, music, trapster, and a phone call all at once. Hmmmm

The phone should be able to handle all those tasks with no issues. I always use my phone in the car for my Music with Navigation and my bluetooth headset connected to it and it works without any issues. It does get hot but that's only if I leave the screen on at 100%. Also, blowing the A/C on it helps.
Burn in shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't keep the phone on 100% brightness for those 7 straight hours and on a static image. I've had my Galaxy S for a year and half now and I haven't noticed any burn in whatsoever but I also don't use it at 100% brightness 24/7. It only goes to 100% when I'm out in the sun. I stick to 25-50% brightness mainly for battery reasons and usually because the screen is bright enough at those levels. Also, just stick to the darker themes/colors and that should reduce the problem further. The contrast works better at night time any way where the screen can get ridiculously bright. If you're watching videos, then the problem should be lesser of an issue since the colors are constantly being changed. People were getting burn in on the Nexus One back in the day because the Froyo Status bar was white/gray and if you're browsing you're phone a lot, that white/gray is a bright color and it burnt in. Gingerbread onwards, the status bar has been turned black for that reason.
Also, when you're using the navigation, the screen dims automatically up until a prompt comes up. So you can put it at 100% brightness if you like but there's a setting that will automatically dim the phone up until you need to make a turn. That should save your screen and battery some. If you're mirroring the screen, you won't notice that change in the dimming on your monitor.

Cyanogenmod 7.2 Stable Builds
After 3 rounds of release candidates, and squashing a few more bugs in the stabilization branch of CyanogenMod 7, the newest stable iteration of the Gingerbread-based CM7 is now being released. The team would like to thank everyone who submitted and followed up on bugs during the RC phase and helped us all get a better 7.2 out there, we couldn’t have done it without all of you, and we’re happy to say most of the devices slated for RC1 ended up getting a stable release today.
As mentioned in the RC1 post, “7.2 adds a couple of backported features and fixes from Android 4 (ICS), over 20 new devices when compared to 7.1, and even some new features to boot (be sure to check out the new predictive contact search in the phone dialer!). We’ve also fixed some bugs along the way. Some of them device-specific, others that affected everybody, and one in particular that’s been plaguing Android for a long time: the mysteriously vanishing SD-card ringtones are no more! You can check the full list of noteworthy changes at the CHANGELOG“.
7.2 also marks the end of the Gingerbread story for some hardware; as phones and tablets “graduate” to an ICS-based CM9 stable release, they will have their CM7 development frozen. That will very soon include the Nexus S devices, and probably a handful of others; for these devices, 7.2.0 will be the last Gingerbread release we do.
It is not, however, the end of the line for CM7. As mentioned before, development for CM7 will continue, even if at a slower pace, for devices that need it. If your phone can't get CM9 updates then you should definitely take a look at the CM7 stable builds. Lots of features from ICS have been backported like the rotation animation and a few other things. CM9 stable builds will probably be coming soon. There were no updates last night for the Nexus builds so I'm guessing the stable CM9 builds are about to be released.

So, I decided to try something slightly different and flashed AOKP last weekend. The customizations are pretty cool. But I just switched back to CM9 Nightly 6/15 and its MUCH faster all around.
I also love Nova Launched with all animations turned off, it just flies.

The issue with a lot of the USB chargers is the phone sees it as just that, a USB port. It ends up cutting the amperage down to not overdraw what it thinks is the port of a computer.
There are two options; get a regular car charger, or short out two of the wires on the USB cable to fool it into thinking its a regular charger. Just make sure you dont use that cable on a computer.

Linus Torvalds gives NVIDIA the finger
Forward it to 49:50 minute mark. NVIDIA was one of the reasons why Honeycomb was closed source for a while. Sucks that they don't want to play nice as its holding back the Android tablet market really because a lot of devs get turned off by NVIDIA and their holding out of a majority of the source code.
Someone from NVIDIA responds at 1:00:30. Lol.

So I wasn't aware that you could Long Press on any of the items in the "Recent Apps" drawer and access the "App Info". I always went to my Settings --> Apps --> Scrolled down to the app I wanted to modify:

Also, not sure how many of you know this but when you're using the stock Android keyboard you can have a popup of the most commonly used words if you slide up from the middle (see those 3 little dots) and just drag your finger to select which word you meant to type:

Finally, for CM9 users, the recent Nightlies allowed you to change in between Vibrate Mode and Normal Mode for the ringer simply by holding Volume Up + Volume Down at the same time.

Light Flow 3.0
Light Flow has been updated with a new UI and some new features. They've enabled a setting similar to the Samsung Galaxy S III's where the phone will vibrate when you have a notification and you pick up the phone which they called "Instant Alert". Click on the beaker:

Once you enable Instant Alert, you'll have an extra setting inside each app Notification to enable/disable it for that app along with the extra customizations as picking the color, making a sound, vibrating, etc. The new layout for the LED notifications is pretty nice looking as well:

This app should work on any of the phones that have notification lights but you will need Root access. HTC phones don't have rainbow LED colors like the Samsung phones so that's a limitation when selecting the colors you want to pick. Also take note that the recent CM9 Nightlies have implemented a Notification Light setting but it is not as flexible as this app.

Just like the T-Mobile version, it looks like this won't be showing OTA. Gotta use Kies or grab it from XDA. I'm sure someone has it there and you can use ODIN to flash it.
AT&T users on the Samsung Galaxy S2 (not the variants) can go ahead and pop some bottles as the device has finally received Ice Cream Sandwich. Users are having to go through Kies, Samsung’s companion software for PC, to get it. It’s better than nothing, though, so grab Kies here (Mac and Windows) if you don’t already have it and see if you can pull down this sweet treat.
