Getting the basic e-reader down to $80 is impressive, IMO.

The Kindle Fire seems interesting for sure. Curious to read more info on the specs. So far it is dual core with IPS gorilla glass display which is a good start. Memory and RAM will be important as well though. Also hoping you can turn off or remove the interface and use native Android but now I am just getting picky.
Tech specs here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051VVOB2
8GB RAM, wifi only.
I'm not going to run out an buy one today (I will wait for the Whiskers review) but it will be interesting to see if they can get developers and content providers behind this device. Considering I paid $140 for an E-reader last year, $199 is a good price IMO.

I think what's cool about the Kindle is the battery life for reading. The new Fire may be an Amazon product, but it's now similar to all the other tablets at 8 hours.
Battery Life:
Kindle 1 month
Kindle Touch 2 months
Kindle Keyboard 2 months
Kindle DX 3 weeks
Kindle Fire- 8 hours continuous reading or 7.5 hours video playback

So it looks like Amazon is going to have 5 e-ink Kindles for sale. I noticed the previous gen is now called Kindle Keyboard. I rarely use the keyboard on mine. I may not have even pressed all the buttons once.
The market for standard e-readers must still be strong if they are willing to support 5 models.
EDIT: Amazon has 6 e-ink readers, I forgot about the DX

Gotta see if it can be rooted for access to the Google market as opposed to the Amazon market. Does the Amazon market get all the apps?
Most importantly needs Netflix, HBO Go, Xfinity, and maybe Hulu Plus as I'd likely use to watch TV and movies. As stated above it's what the software can do for me. At least the issue of storage space is solved with the Amazon cloud.

I have a Kindle and I absolutely love it. The Fire looks promising, but Amazon is putting on their "big boy shoes" creeping into tablet territory with this new device and that space is very competitive.
^ At their pricepoint? Not competitive at all...they just basically took the market and shook it upside-down I think. Kinda what HP inadvertently did with the TouchPad firesale...
Then again, let's see what aura Apple continues to hold on the general populace. If the crowd still wants to pay 99993420X more for a tablet...it's the market.

Yeah I have a feeling it won't matter to the Apple fan crowd.
I don't know. Over a year ago friends and business contacts demanded I get a smartphone. I did, and used it for about a month. It's been sitting unloved and uncharged for about a year now. I hated it. Now I'm told I'm missing out not having a tablet.
At the end of the day, the market is really what matters.
If you ask the average Joe what it means to own a tablet, price-wise...and their answer is $402345234.35. Well, there you go: iPad.
Still, I think Amazon's onto something that HP stumbled on earlier. I wish them well...Competition begets excellence and innovation. I'm all for it.

I'm not sold on tablets either, but I love my Evo.

There is nothing you can't do off of your trusty computer/laptop that some tablet can supposedly do better. A touchscreen, while nice, is just a luxury esp. if what you need from a computer device is basic web-surfing, some general accounting stuff, and word processing.

I mean, I know...I know...it's not made by the Fruitists...so, not worth reading about. But, really...I would take a look at its specs and functionality. It is significantly better than the Nook Color...
well obviously since the nook color is older.
So...how can you compare the two? And the functionality offered is way different. And the Fire is larger than the Nook, is it not...?
[snark=ON]I don't really see the iPad as a competitor to God, more of a competitor to the netbook with touchscreen...[/snark]

Ah...thinner...
Here's the breakdown spec-for-spec between the God-machine, Nook, and Kindle Fire: http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/28/a...color-numbers/
