ummm, they are the same resolution. One is not more sharp than the other. They're the same resolution and both can fully resolve 720p high definition. Any "grainy" picture is a result of artificial processing or oversharpening of the image.
I kind agree on resolution, but it depends on what TV your looking at and what input your using. If you take the same exact broadcast DVD Video, HDTV, or Cable and you look at text on a DLP and a Plasma side by side. You will see a difference! It's about how accurate the image is. DLP's hold tighter pixels thus you get excellent contrast ratios which produce a sharper looking image. The text edge does not blur in to the back of the screen.
and about this...
Now lets talk about color depth and black level. That's where plasmas shine.
Note Plasma is mentioned 1/2 way down the page. http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/...s_Plasma3.html
Note that on the DLP page it mentions "Excellent contrast ratios (using HD2+)" as an advantage.
Check out this info it's a good overview of all technologies...

I often visited Definitive Audio which is a high end audio video store. Some hear and feel that Plasma is an interim technology. But that is just an opinion who really knows.

Lastly I like this quote on the DLP page... "Current DMD chips can produce up to 1024 shades of gray." Thats really incredible.

I mentioned earlier... at the Costco by my house they have the Samsung 61" DLP right now side by side with the Pioneer HDTV 43" plasma, and with the very brite fluorescent lighting, I stood at every angle possible and the plasma was still more impressive. YES, I wouldn't have that kind of lighting in my pad... but that, to me, was what got me to consider a plasma... but I also have to ad... last year, I watched the Superbowl at someone's house with the Samsung 61" DLP, and I was very impressed as well.

I'd go as far to say that Costco would not have configured the TV's brightness or contrast to be best for viewing. Play with those setting before you buy so you can see what you like. Or go to another store with the same models and try it there.
Also, do try to check out text on the screen. I loved the crispness of the DLP's and it made a difference to me. But thats my opinion.
Hope your happy with what you buy. Good luck.

i think the aquos is up to 37 now.......with 45 coming soon.......so it would be 45" aquos vs 60" grand wega........but you're right the flat panel lcds are damn expensive for the size.......i'll most likely get the wega.......thanks man.

2500:1 Contrast Ratio, nice! Gen 4 HD Fourth Generation Light Engine too. Oooooh thats nice.
Spec Sheet...
http://www.samsungusa.com/SamsungUSA...26/hlp5085.pdf
Looks like the prices range from $3549-$4199 when you look online. Don't think you can find one at the store for less then 4k but maybe. I would be happy to own this TV. When I buy items I usually do a same as cash deal if I don't pay for it in full. Maybe you can get that deal too?
Comes with a one year warranty . Personally, I never buy the extended warranty because I end up getting rid of the item before it breaks, but thats just me.

IS300, that's a beautiful TV! The DLPs I saw had great pictures, and were in my final consideration. (I went with the Sony LCD rear projection).
I'm sure you will be happy with it. That stand is really handsome. Good deal!
Skip the extended warranty. On my Sony it was $600! (I forget how many years, I think it was 4). I didn't get it.

Great choice! I picked up the 56" version 3 weeks ago and love it. As far as taking up space, it's only 13" deep and weighs just over 100 lbs. Great picture, lots of inputs, and no worries about images burning into the screen. We had considered getting the new 6163 with 1500:1 contrast ratio but waited for the side to side comparison, glad we waited. The 2500:1 ratio is so much brighter I couldn't believe it.
Regarding the extended warranty? Definitely get it. I had a 56" Toshiba Theater Wide rear projection that I had purchased the 5 year warranty on. With 6 months to go the TV fried. Burnt all 3 picture tubes and the main circuit board was going to need to be rebuilt. The warranty company paid us the $1500 that the repair was going to cost then I went back to Magnolia HiFi where I purchased it and they gave us $1300 of the cost of the new Samsung. Ended up paying $2100 for the new set that retails for $4899, and yes, we did pay an addtional $400 for the extended warranty so it was $2500 out of pocket.

Warranty is worth it, We had a 36 inch Sony we bought years back, like 4 years later it, started having these spots, we renewed our warranty Called them month later and he used some magnetic stuff to make the spots go away, it didnt work so I called them up, and they told us if it doesnt fix the first time, they will just give us store credit on the current price of the TV, we got the TV for like $1500-1600 years back and it was selling for $999 now, so We payed $600 more and got another TV, basically Upgraded, gotta love warranties

okay, so today, I drove all over town looking at TVs and when I got to Circuit City, they had the Samsung 50" DLP (4th gen. on pedistal) next to the Sony 50" Grand Wega LCD, and I... literally got my face inches away from each screen to compare pixels... and I, honestly can't tell the difference.... they were both impressive... I could, however... tell that the quality of the DLPs of the 3rd gen. were NOT as good...
Okay... so this is what it comes down to... I'm going to buy tomorrow (Monday, Labor Day)
Samsung DLP w/o extended warranty- $4317 or
Samsung DLP w/ 4 years extended warranty-$4717 or
Sony Grand Wega LCD 50" w/5 *years extended warranty- $3427
*from the Sony Store the 5 years (in home) warranty is only $180! Whereas all other stores are asking $400 for only 4 years.
I know the Samsung DLP is a kickass TV cause for one thing... the pedistal makes it look really cool... and it's the newest thing out there.... but I, seriously couldn't tell the difference myself... I did the same comparison again at Best Buy and both TVs and got the same results.
I would just hate it, if suppose I get the Sony and a few months down the road they come out with something better.... with the Samsung, it is the latest model. BUT if I go with the Sony, and save money... I can buy the HD reciever earlier.
Sorry to keep dragging this thread along... but by tomorrow night this time... I'll have had purchased a TV.

Did you see both TV's with text on the screen? If not I'd make sure you check it out. May help with your choice. Yes the image may look the same, but just wait until you see some text or scrolling movie credits on both.
Personally I'd go DLP. It's a proven technology, been around for years, and the screen won't burn in if you want to ever hook up a computer or gaming system.

Ah, well good. At least you looked. If you can't see a difference then I guess you just need to pick the one you like. Perhaps the one with better controls or inputs. I know Samsung has not been really renown as Sony, but seriously consider that they are the leaders in HDTV tech in Japan and other countries.
Good luck!

BUT it might be earlier though... cause I was driving home... and just happen to stop by Circuit City and turns out... it's cheaper there by $200!!!! So, tomorrow... I'm going back to Best Buy and if they won't match it... I'm just gonna return it (something I don't even have yet), and go straight to Circuit City and buy it there... I talked to them earlier tonight, and their delivering days are more open then Best Buy's so, if I end up buying the TV from C.C.... then I may even get it sooner than Saturday!!!

Samsung is a Korean electronics manufacturer. They are doing pretty good eh? I hope you like your new TV. What did your friend think of the TV's? How did you come to the conclusion to get the Samsung DLP? You odviously put a lot of thought and research in to this decision. Might help others with picking one.
I hope to get one soon.

I think I got a pretty good deal... it's retail for $4200 and it was on sale at Circuit City for $3780 which is a saving of $420 off, pretty good for a TV that just came out about a month ago.. or less.
