While I wouldn't call Football players pussies, Hockey is far more violent.

Your basically holding and shooting a weapon in Hockey. And lets not even talk about the fighting.

They both have a pretty high level of "violence", but I would have to go with Football since practically every play is balls out hitting.

Of course hockey has the unfair advantage of fighting. But Football has more felons

And a pigskin isnt a weapon in the hands of Farve or Manning?

Its really a draw for me. You dont get hits and tackles every play like you do in Football. Hockey has some downtime when they're just scuffling for the puck, during PP's and what not.

Hmmm, poll seems a touch slanted. I'd have to go with hockey. There's no out of bounds in hockey.

But some of the best hits in Football are when someone is trying to get another out of bounds

You'd have to factor in that hockey players play 66 more games per season that football players.

True, true.

Football is defiantly tough. I mean the whole point of the game is to knock a guy off his feet or they score, but I don't consider it violent. Nor do I consider clean hitting in hockey violent. But hockey can be more violent than football I think.

Hitting a guy from behind happens in football all the time, but hitting from behind in hockey can result in injury alot more since the guys head usually gets drilled into the boards. And he's off balance to begin with since their on skates.

That may be the deciding factor....Football players can experience a life / career changing injury more often then a hockey player...

And c'mon, just by the fact that hockey allows for fighting makes it more violent...

The big key is distinguishing the difference between rough/tough versus violent. And while you can make cases I suppose for how rough either sport is, hockey is the one that's more violent.

^ Hell, football players have facemasks...hockey players? At the most, a visor for the eyes...and that's it. And it was just a couple years back that some played without helmets. Hockey wayyyy more violent.

Not to mention every player has a weapon in his hand, and often uses it (unfortunately)

Dom and I can bitchslap each other until we end up kissing, that doesnt make it violent....However, if I snap my neck getting tackled, then thats what I consider violent....

I don't see how hockey players are any less "lights out" the second the clock starts but I see your point. Football is tough, no question. Its hard hitting and players gets injured quite often, but fighting alone IMO makes hockey the more violent sport IMO.

The NFL does not allow players to stand toe to toe to punch each others lights out.

Let me hit you from behind head first into boards that don't have any give and then tell me how your neck feels.

Yeah, but when that happens in hockey, nothing...play doesn't stop, etc. In football, they bring out the paramedics and go to commercial...

And I'll venture to guess that since your from Florida, you never played the game?

You think the NHL is rough, try playing men's league up here. Makes the NHL look like a night at the ballet.

Because, we watch BOTH sports. I was of the same mindset as you when I was in the States...and then I started to watch hockey regularly since moving to Canada. There is no way football is more violent than hockey.

It doesn't happen that often in Hockey because hitting from behind is against the rules. If it wasn't there would be 2 teams of paramedics on hand.

Here's how I score it.

Number of tackles/hits: Marginal Advantage football
Number of High Speed Collisions: Advantage hockey
Punching/Fighting: Advantage hockey
Injuries per game: Advantage football
Head/Face injuries per game: Advantage Hockey
Use of a weapon: Advantage hockey:

So 4-2, hockey is more violent.

People please, look at the demographics of the participants and use race as the leading indicator.

If the premise, "black people are more violent than white people" holds true, then OBVIOUSLY football > hockey.

You got it... not only have I never played it... I have only watched it... at best, very minimal....

I do however, go to about 10-15 Jacksonville Barracudas games each season. (they are a minor leauge, or whatever it is called team here...)

I'm not bashing hockey by any means... I guess my opinion is just very biased due to my lack of knowledge of the game.
