Great article, and something that needs to be out there for more of the general public to read. I was really ashamed to see how the american press portrayed him simply as a goon as that was not nearly the case. I still give him a big for the headbutt as well.

I thought it was an interesting read, although I dont know what he was lauding Zidane. Maybe the Italian said something, but there are better, more effective ways to get back at someone. Zidane lost his cool, looked like a fucking idiot, and marred the last minutes of his career. I've said this a few times in the WC thread, but its worth mentioning here as well, Zidane should have taken him out hard with an on the ball tackle. I think the writer enjoyed that headbutt too much to really think the entire situation through before printing it up.

He's a fool, a goon, and a bum who fell right into Materazzi's hands. And for the captain of a team to do this, in the world cup finals no less, is inexusable. And I'm saying this as a guy who is a big fan of his skill and play as a soccer player.
But I feel like we've had this discussion before
"Zidane received his first red card when he was playing for a Cannes team; he punched opposing team player Desailly at that time, in September 1993, and was ejected from the match. During the 1998 World Cup, in a match against Saudi Arabia, he stomped on a player who was lying on the field, and received not only a red card, but a two game suspension. And in a move which was almost exactly the same as the one which earned him his latest red card, Zidane headbutted German player Jochen Kientz in a Hamburg match in October 2000. His headbutt against Kientz hit the player in the chin however, and in addition to being ejected from the game, Zidane was suspended from 5 matches by football's UEFA authority. Some say that particular act of anger was also responsible for the French Football magazine deciding not to award him the Golden Ball award. In fact, thousands of Juventus (Zidane's team) fans wrote into their club's web site after Zidane's headbutt in 2000, saying "We do not want this kind of cruel football." Zidane's penultimate red card before the one that ended the 2006 World Cup match came in May 2003, in a match against Madrid's Villreal team."

I think this sums up whats behind the article.
Defenders such as Materazzi are skillful in their own right, but they have also mastered the black arts that disfigure the game. The Italians are particularly good at it, as the Americans discovered during their 1-1 draw in Kaiserslautern, a game in which Brian McBride's face was slashed open by an Italian elbow.

The funny thing is, we are the only people who think Zidane looked like an idiot, i've read a few other articles from around the world and they all liked the move. Shit like this goes on in soccer, hell if you watched some of the corner kicks in the WC, you saw a lot of hits to the groan, elbows to the chest, etc. I played club soccer till I was 17 and shit like this was a common occurance. (Ironically, my last season of AYSO at 18 was cancelled because there was a fight after the first 10 games of the season of what was suppose to be a 22 game year )
I for one, don't view Zidanes move as bad at all, part of the game, kind of like a hard check on the ice in Hockey, but a little dirtier. Reality is, while most people think soccer is a pussie sport, it's a VERY VERY dirty game. But then again, I was a total goon when I played

do you honeslty think the out come owuld have been different? The guy that missed the PK was completely capable of making it 9/10 times as any other player.
I hear ya, but even his country praised his move.

I know this goes on in soccer, I played my entire life and spent the last few years coaching. He looked like a pussy because he couldnt wait to get back at the Italian guy who was pissing him off. Zidane needs to take a page out of Vinnie Jones book...you lay the guy out hard with a violent tackle on the ball. Zidane couldnt keep his head together long enough to figure that out.
I dont look at what he did as entirely bad, I look at it as fucking stupid. I was always embarassed if I lost my temper at a time when the play wasnt going on. It feels good at the time, but thats about it.
