so the last time the Summer Olympics were held in the USA was Atlanta 1996. And the last time it was held in Australia was Sydney 2000.

Yea. Qatar, Hungary and Germany were attempting to run. Not sure what happened there, but for 2032 the IOC switched to a new format to elect cities, supposedly lowers the cost of proposing and bidding. also helps prevent bribery to secure votes.
