I heard an analyst speculating that Bilichick uses the early games to work through some trial and error on how he uses personnel groups (as evidence by who gets touches) and then dials it in once he has some game data to look at. Given how I believe he uses game performance data to make decisions, I think that's entirely plausible. I think Bilichick is "Moneyball" applied to football.

Ya thats pretty much all true. Its annoying to watch at first because you know they can play so much better, but it usually works out in the end

Helps that the AFC kinda stinks this year

Brady looked like a rookie last night. Throwing bombs to nobody, into double/triple coverage for an interception and sacked multiple times.

The Packers just suck right now, we gave that game away! The Mathews hit was bullshit, again. I don't see how their tackle where they spun Rodgers around and slammed him down landing on top wasn't called but a textbook tackle by Clay where he almost rolled over the guy was called. Lets put red practice jersey's on them and then play. It's getting out of hand!

Minnesota routed by the Bills! Lets see what Bills team shows up next week in GreenBay... Hopefully Rodgers isn't doing more damage to him knee by playing.

In their Bowl years, they had games where they got beat badly too early...and we all know what happened: their cheatin' got better as the season progressed and yeah, wins started to pile on. I would not rule out the Pats until they are actually eliminated from the playoffs. They still have enough to turn it around quickly IMO. It's just Week 3.

Regarding that BB early season theory...is it that true though? There's only 16 games in a season, and every week your team will be prepping for you and every game can mean a difference at the end whether you make the playoffs or not.

And as this past sunday has shown....no team is safe. The Bills, the consensus on the worst team in the league, beat the Vikings (a playoff favorite team), the Titans beat the Jaguars, Redskins beat the Packers, and a QB from KC (really...kansas city?) set an NFL record for most TDs thrown in the first 3 weeks of a season beating out TB12 and PFM.

Obviously we know BB is a future NFL HOFer and a legendary genius....but just hard for me to wrap my head around him basically ok with throwing away a couple games to "dial things in" and then expecting to have another 10+ win season.

Dolphins are 3-0, the Bills is showing potential sign of life with their new QB, Jets are in the discussion circle to acquire Leveon Bell. AFC West has the high power Chiefs with 538 stats showing them to be the favorite to win the SB given data so far. The Chargers, while 1-2, have shown explosive scoring potential as well. Steelers not doing as well as they were expecting but they look like they are putting the drama behind them, trading away bell likely, and have found James Connor as a very serviceable back. The Jags are nursing a Fournette injury as well as Colts trying to get Luck dialed back in and the Browns are no longer the league laughing stock with a new QB at the helm as well. The Texans are quite under performing as many expected Watson to ball out which has not happened so far.

The AFC can be very competitive IMO this season. All in all, makes for great football.

And of course being a Chiefs fan this is a very very exciting time!!!

Chiefs always do this, they go strong until the playoffs and then fall off.

Won't be surprised if it happens again.

Pats keep getting rid of Bradys weapons in favor of draft picks or just not re-signing them in favor of cheap vets/rookies.. Dion Lewis, Amendola, Brandin Cooks, hell they even tried to trade Gronk. That front office is really pushing it expecting the team to win despite a lack of talent.

NFCS looks crazy this season.. Brees still going strong and putting the Saints on his back, the Falcons finally have a WR2 in Ridley, the Bucs are finally exciting and Fitzmagic is back and the Panther's new-look offense under Norv Turner keeps evolving each week

Nist7 I'm not saying Bill is throwing games or anything but they are 100% a different in Oct than they are in Sept. I'll try to find the stats but Brady's record in October is comical

This is what me and every other Chiefs fan is so deathly scared of. We finally become good enough to make the playoffs, but then choke out of the post season early.

Of course we hope this year that isn't the case.......

k
They've done this for 20yrs and it's seems to have always worked out. They never get stuck in a big contract for a position player

I read Moneyball several times and studied it quite a bit. The theory is based on the statistics being proven out over a long period time. So lets say BB is applying something like that to football. His data will show how many games he needs to win to make the playoffs (and he just needs to make it, not be 14-2). It will also show that maybe (hypothetically) sacrificing a game or two to learn some things pays off bigger in the end and doesn't really jeopardize his ability to make the playoffs. A game or two is worth the investment. I think in BB's method it's not a desperate scramble to win every game at all costs - I think he plays the long game. And his track record would show he's more right than not - if I'm reading the stats right, since BB joined the pats in 2000 he's made the payoffs 15 of 18 years and made the SB 8 times.

Whatever he's figured out, I think he trusts it.

I think BB acquires players with specific skills to fit specific needs (in the skill positions anyway). He can take guys like White, Burkehead, Amendola, etc. who don't have a huge range but are very effective in specific roles. Most teams like the big splash of a Beckham, Bell, Brown, etc. but for the cost of one of them, BB fills his roster with 3-4 people that when you add them up, can do more and exploit certain situations better than any single player. Like having the right kind of saw blade for different cuts rather than just using a chain saw for everything. He spends his money on the QB to make it all run, an O-line to keep him safe, keep the defense competitive.

Ye i'm not saying it hasn't worked or won't work but its always been "next man up" for them and this set of players stepping up are really a cut below the last few years. I'm a huge Brady fan but they came into the season with Hogan, Dorsett and Patterson as their WRs... Patterson couldn't get playing time in MIN because he couldn't learn Norv Turners offense after 4 seasons. It won't get easier with the Pats.

I guess the plan is to use James White as the utility back, Edelman coming in and taking over the slot and using Dorsett as a deep threat. Throw in Gronk and that's still a very subpar unit if Edelman can even still be productive. Who knows how fast JG can pick up the playbook.

Yeah for sure. BB is a GOAT HC and his record speaks for itself...the fact that his team has absolutely trounced the rest of the league for almost 20 years is..quite astonishing. And taking this into account I probably have no grounds to call into question how he works his magic.

I have the utmost respect for Belichick. Never really had a reason to hate on him or the Patriots. He's just a grump and a non-conformist, makes him that much more endearing.

I like Brady too, one of the best QBs to ever do it. Plus he grew up a Niners fan! Only things are he has the audacity to call avocado ice cream, he's a kisser of son lips, and he supports a guy who eats well done steaks.

That cut he made looked bad in slow mo. It was all but confirmed via MRI, not surprised.

That's ok, I'm used to disappointment. Just feel bad for Staley, he's one of those loyal, valuable, non-toxic guys. I hold him, Gore, and Willis in the same regard.

Joe was about to retire this last off-season until they talked him out of it. He sounded really bummed in the postgame interview.

Even with those negatives though....dude's living fucking dream. Future HOFer NFL QB, married to a friggin supermodel that makes more money than he does. And basically he's in the will of Bob Kraft I would imagine and is like a son to the owner......

But from what I've read/seen about how hard he worked when he was starting out, guess he did put in his time/effort and now is reaping the rewards.

Very true. He put in his time and as I learned through reading about Garoppolo, QB isn't a position but a way of life almost.

Brady sleeps at 8pm and avoids all electronics an hour or two before that. His way of life is like a religion and he is intensely devoted to it.

Brady is like the son Marinovich's dad wishes he had.

Impressive but seems a bit interesting why they started to count from 2014. Seems a bit selected.
I'd like to see Brady's entire 18 year career for his october stats.....maybe someone who has too much free time on their hands can look it up lol.....
