NBA: Johnson out as Mavs Coach

I'm gonna stick to what I think, which is, in the Mavs situation it isn't Avery, it's more the players IMO and Mark Cuban. Other than Dirk, they have NO solid secong option. The rest of the players are streaky at best. I feel Avery did an excellent job taking a wanna be run and gun suns type offense to actually playing some D-fense. A coach can only do so much, it's up to the players to execute. Bad move on Cuban's part for letting Avery go.

Suns coach on the other hand should be the one to go. He has no defensive strategy. Hell, he doesn't even coach his players. His offense is just this: Steal the ball and run a fast break. Or throw up lobs for guys that can jump. So if you ask me, he should go. He was just lucky to have players that made him look good.

Avery Johnson is out as Dallas Mavericks coach, the Dallas Morning News reported on its Web site, citing unidentified sources.

Johnson out as Dallas coach? Avery Johnson took over as Dallas coach in 2005 after Don Nelson stepped down. Despite a string of stellar regular-season efforts, it has not translated to much playoff success.
Year Games W-L Result
2004-05 18 16-2 L, 2nd round
2005-06* 82 60-22 L, NBA Finals
2006-07 82 67-15 L, 1st round
2007-08 82 51-31 L, 1st round
Totals 264 194-70
*-- Won NBA Coach of the Year award The move comes a day after the Mavs were eliminated from the playoffs. The Hornets beat Dallas 99-94 on Tuesday to take their first-round series 4-1.

Johnson, who won an NBA title with San Antonio as a player in 1999, was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2006, when he led the Mavericks to within two games of a championship.

Dallas appeared prime to make another title run last year, but the 8th-seeded Golden State Warriors stunned the top-seeded Mavs in six games in one of the biggest first-round upsets in NBA history. Dallas finished this season as the No. 7 seed in the West.

The Mavericks tried to shake things up in the middle of the season, trading a package of players — including point guard Devin Harris — to the Nets for Jason Kidd. Yet while the Mavs did play well towards the end of the regular season just to make the playoffs, they were clearly overmatched by a younger Hornets team.
