DENVER -- Three months after the biggest brawl in NBA history, the basketball league Thursday told its teams to limit the sale of beer and warn fans against wearing clothes with obscene messages.
Fans who violate the regulations can be ejected.
The NBA is also advising teams on how many security officers to hire, where they should work and what tactics they should use.
``We look at this as an opportunity to remind people that coming to an arena is an opportunity to share an experience of rooting a home team on to victory and booing the opposition, but not doing it in an anti-social way that goes against our civil society,'' NBA Commissioner David Stern told The Denver Post.
The regulations are meant to prevent a repeat of a brawl at a Detroit Pistons-Indiana Pacers game in November, when players went into the stands after a fan threw a full cup of beer at the Pacers' Ron Artest.
The new rules ban the sale of alcohol after the fourth quarter begins, limit drinks to 24 ounces each, and restrict fans to two drinks each. Designated driver programs are also required at each arena.
An NBA Fan Code of Conduct, to be posted in all arenas, bars indecent messages on signs or clothing and reminds players to ``respect and appreciate each and every fan.''
Stern said many teams already meet the new standards.
Five Pacers players and seven fans were charged in the Nov. 19 melee at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich. The league suspended Artest for the rest of the season, and other players were given suspensions of up to 30 games.

I never understood why players complain about "respect" when they are paid so much...?

The restriction is 2 drinks per purchase, not 2 drinks maximum. That's pretty much the same rule I've seen in almost every sports venue.

this whole thing is crazy "lets limit/punish the fans" because a few drunks threw some beer at some millionairs, god forbid they get some beer on those pretty little uniforms they wear, i mean come the fuck on, for the amont of money these players get paid to play a game that they say they love to play you can throw the whole dam keg at me. if i was the commish i take their pay, endorsments and ban them for life from ever having anything to do with the NBA, and tell them to grow the fuck up. but that just my opinion.

“No more crack? Aww, that’s not fair,” said Mike Robeson, 27. “The Palace was the only arena in the country that would sell that stuff to its fans, and that’s what made it so unique. Now we don’t even really have a homecourt advantage anymore. We’re just like any other boring, crackless arena. Well that does it. I’m no longer a Pistons fan. I think I’ll move to Portland , where you can at least buy crack from the players.”
