NBA: 2011 Off-Season News and Discussion Thread

Revenues and ratings are at their highest ever. I've heard a big problem is overpaying middle tier guys with all the exceptions that allow salary cap exceeding. Unsmart spending and bad contracts are big culprits for these losses. Plus I don't trust so much NBA teams' accounting. Naturally owners cry poverty when a CBA comes up to get a better piece of the pie. It certainly isn't the NFL where it's splitting $9 billion though.

I ain't taking sides....both are crying like they got a ferrari when they wanted a lambo.
Its basketball, boys. The players aren't a union of firemen or police, and the owners aren't running a not-for-profit hospital for blind orphans.
The business has got to make money, and then that business has to pay its employees accordingly.
I do agree with your premise that some of the owners aren't pulling their weight. It ain't just the players. Stern's gotta punish a couple of owners for not being fiscally responsible as well.

The biggest problem isn't necessarily the mid tier guys (although I agree many of them are overpaid). Its mainly the fact that many of the owners that are complaining that they're losing money is because they purchased their team during the boon of the economy.
And even though the economy has taken a hit on NBA revenues/sales, player contracts have only gone up in price - partially the owners/GM's fault for not taking care of the team's finances.
Either way, many are predicting there will be no NBA season this year.

^ I've read that too. But I take it revenue for the NBA as a whole has gone up - but not that every team is making tons.
I imagine big market teams: Lakers, Knicks, Celtics and now the Heat and Mavs are doing fine and are way above the average. Teams like the Cavs/Kings/Wars/Wizards/etc are probably pulling way below average.
Although the Wars selling for $450 million is mindboggling to me...

Interesting. The funny thing, I know an NBA exec here in LA. I know, yada yada, we all know someone. However, this is someone that doesn't like the ownership he works for, (and I'm not saying who). My good friend is a pretty pragmatic person. Had a good convo on this subject in the middle of the playoffs.
You'd be surprised at the figures...the real figures, on what teams make per game. For the Lakers, a couple mil per game. For the Clippers, they don't make anywhere near the Lakers. Yet, both laugh at each other across the hall because on one hand, there is alot of money being made, however there is alot being spent. On the other hand...let's just say they are lucky to have Blake Griffin still on his rookie contract, lol.
Revenues can be up, and for the teams here in LA, they can be thankful they have those lux suites, Blake Griffin, and Kobe Bryant. Both these teams can rely on about 15 million people looking for a sporting event to go to (with no NFL competition).
Not all teams have that luxury. LA, New York, MIami, Chicago, etc.... I'm sure things are going well for them. But the same can't be said for small market teams or teams without a draw. I understand that revenue sharing can help these teams out, but ideally, all teams should be in the black.

Aside from all that business talk....
I'm disappointed with the discontinuity a lockout will entail. For Dallas, the Lakers, and Celtics, these teams have a collection of players that are older. I don't think these 'eras' are ending, but the capacity to repeat or get another title with the same core will be rapidly diminish if we end up skipping a year.
The Heat will still be the favorites like this year, but I think it messes with their continuity as well. And maybe the big 3 aren't old, but a couple of their bigs are pretty old.
I think the Spurs are looking into suspended animation or experimental hibernation therapy, lol....

If there's a hard cap put in place it will be interesting to see some of the players that get bought out and end up on the open market. Similar to what happened in the NHL 6 years ago when the cap was 39 million and several teams had to dump salary. (I'm looking at you Chris Bosh)

Well, if there is a hard cap in the NBA, it won't be anywhere near 39 mill. And that 39 mill had to be shared between 25 players. In the NBA, it only 13 or 14.
Last year's payroll's
LA Lakers ~ 95.3
Orlando Magic ~ 89.9
Dallas Mavericks ~ 85.8
Boston Celtics ~ 83.3
Denver Nuggets ~ 83.0
Houston Rockets ~ 72.7
Utah Jazz ~ 71.1
Philadelphia 76ers ~ 69.4
Atlanta Hawks ~ 69.1
New Orleans Hornets ~ 68.9
Memphis Grizzlies ~ 67.8
Milwaukee Bucks ~ 67.7
Portland Blazers ~ 67.5
San Antonio Spurs ~ 64.9
Detroit Pistons ~ 64.7
Golden State Warriors ~ 64.6
Indiana Pacers ~ 64.4
Charlotte Bobcats ~ 61.1
New Jersey Nets ~ 57.0
Phoenix Suns ~ 55.4
Miami Heat ~ 54.4
Washington Wizards ~ 52.7
Cleveland Cavaliers ~ 51.3
OKC Thunder ~ 50.3
Toronto Raptors ~ 49.4
New York Knicks ~ 47.2
LA Clippers ~ 47.0
Chicago Bulls ~ 46.7
Sacramento Kings ~ 39.0
Minnesota T-Wolves ~ 37.6
If the cap is about 60 million they'll be some cutting.

They're all bitches, lol....
When you've got articles like Doomie's throwing up there about bad accounting practices, and on the other side, you've got guys that play a kids sport whining about not getting their fair share of millions, I can't feel sorry or be angry about any side.
Millionaires arguing with billionaires. Sorry, I hear what your saying Doomie, and its a valid point, but no one's an innocent party here.
Tired of hearing whining, posturing, whoa is me....Just figure that shit out already and get me a season please!!

Oh trust me, I ain't saying anyone's innocent, Earlie. I just like putting out there the info. But like in football the ones affected are the team employees that will get furloughed or laid off. Plus the young players or low tier vets that didn't get paid much are going to hurt too. I've heard that the union's offer was pretty fair which is why some NBA writers didn't think it would last long. But the owners wanna push the lockout even longer for leverage. I've heard no progress until probably September.

Agreed on the staff and the less talented players. Its probably a pretty daunting situation for those guys that are trying to get into the nba. Might have to play in the d league our pick up and move their families to play overseas.
its rough for the little guys, for sure...

Kobe, D. Rose, K. Love, Westbrook, and a couple of others are going on a tour of Asia. They'll be on a 5-city tour, and will participate against the Philippines best all-stars.

Now, I'm a proud filipino, but they are going to get their asses beat. Kobe's would not only be a center in that league, he'd be a tall one!
But I'm sure they are going to want their pictures taken during said beat down.

Bron and Bosh just hung out and did a charity thing the other day. Is this what the lockout will bring us. Yum, go open a Twitter so we can have 24 hour analysis on LeBron. You sure you don't work for ESPN's Heat Index?
