I couldn't believe it. But hey, Cubs put up 40mil for the dude, I'd go too if my club won't match.

Came from left field. Had no idea Cubs were even shopping for a new manager.

Frankly, I think it's the wrong Chicago baseball team that needs a new skipper but, hey...

Will they still operate like a small-market franchise in Las Vegas?

Just curious who will land Shohei. That contract is going to be nuts.

It will be interesting if the next team wants him to pitch. That dictates a huge part of the $$$$

I'm Not surprised about this, on one hand, it's nice that he's staying in SoCal but on the other hand... It's annoying because growing up in Anaheim (we were neighbors with Rod Carew!), I've always rooted for the Angles first (even though they always suck 😂 )

That is me with the Mets.
the house across the street was a Mets house. When one player was traded he would sell it to the next one. This went on for years.

Was it really a surprise that the Dodgers got him?

Still, as sexy as hitting being added is...it's pitching that gets the World Series...and I am unsure if the Dodgers have the SP to go all the way.

There's a tax benefit to him for doing this, assuming he won't be living in the U.S. when he collects the deferred amount.

Is it different from the Bobby Bonilla deal?

Completely different circumstances. Bonilla was leaving and the team owed him money.

This is a brand new contract and the largest in sports. Not $5mill like Bonilla

I read that Ohtani's contract contains a clause that allows him to terminate the deal if either controlling owner Mark Walter or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman are no longer with the team

Supposedly, Ohtani makes $45M/year on endorsements alone 😲 (probably a lot from Japanese ads)

That sounds about right

During his heyday Tiger woods was making 100m a year from his endorsements

Baseball is predicated on timely hitting and pitching. And in a short series and not the backdrop of nearly 200 regular season games -- where it averages out -- anything can happen.

But yeah, LA is going all in but it's not guaranteed. Their bullpen and etc. needs to hold and execute come that 7-game series.

Dodgers seriously have everyone.

Meanwhile, Cubs? All that press they are 'in' on the biggest stars for signings?
